Playing formats

The league uses 9v9 football at U12 and U13, moving to 11v11 at U14 and U15. This progression is a useful part of the league’s identity: players move from the smaller-sided game into the full format as they get older.

The Tyro League is not a central-venue competition; teams play their fixtures at their own venues. Its official information also says the season generally begins on the first weekend of September after schools return, although exact dates and the fixture programme should be checked each season.

Matchday culture

The league has supported the FA’s Silent Support initiative, which asks spectators and coaches to encourage young players with applause rather than touchline instruction. Its website also links to FA Respect guidance for adults and young people in youth football.
