First Half
Right from the first whistle, the intensity was clear to see — this was always going to be a fiery, close-fought clash against the league leaders. The tempo was high, with both sides snapping into tackles and battling hard for every loose ball, making for a really entertaining contest.
Defib came agonisingly close to opening the scoring when Alex Attwell whipped in a brilliant, dangerous cross that picked out Mckenzie Jones perfectly — his crashing strike smacking against the upright and bouncing away, leaving everyone watching holding their breath.
David Duffy was already turning heads with a gritty, uncompromising display; he threw himself into challenge after challenge, winning every duel and putting his body on the line to shut down Rangers’ attacks time and again. Behind him, Hari Morgan was equal to everything thrown his way, pulling off a string of confident, sharp saves to keep the scores level. Both teams carved out plenty of chances that really should have found the net, but with defences standing firm and the woodwork coming to the rescue, it remained all square at the break.
Second Half
The energy never dropped after the restart — if anything, the game got even tighter and more frantic. Rangers piled on the pressure, moving the ball quickly and probing for gaps, but they just couldn’t find that final pass or finish to break through.
Defib grew into the game and created some huge moments of their own. Substitute Lewis Evans almost wrote himself into the headlines, letting fly with a thunderous shot that smashed against the crossbar and bounced down onto the line before being scrambled clear — so close to a sensational goal! Matthew Hughes also produced a moment of magic, ghosting past two defenders with a clever dummy before firing just wide, drawing gasps from the sideline.
At the back, Alex Attwell was a rock, and when Harvey Kerslake joined the action, he slotted in perfectly to keep the leaders at bay. In midfield, Tom Kennett buzzed around everywhere, linking play beautifully and combining well with Evans to cause all sorts of problems. The whole side was working their socks off, giving absolutely everything for the shirt.
Just as it looked like a hard-earned draw was on the cards, the game turned in the final five minutes. A chaotic scramble in the box saw Rangers force the ball over the line to take the lead, and before Defib could regroup, they grabbed a second to seal the win. It was a heartbreaking ending for Defib, who had matched the leaders stride for stride all game long.
Man of the Match – David Duffy
A clear and popular choice, Duffy was simply immense. His rugged, no-nonsense style, endless energy and fearless challenges frustrated the opposition from start to finish. He led by example, putting in a shift that set the tone for the whole team, and fully earned the award for a truly committed performance.
Summary
A fantastic, spirited performance that had everything — passion, intensity, and plenty of drama. Defib more than proved they belong at this level, and with a bit more luck in front of goal, this would have been a famous result. The effort and commitment were there for all to see, and the team can be incredibly proud of how they played.
