First Half

A tight, competitive opening period, with The Ball Bags just holding the upper hand. The game got off to a lively start: Alex Attwell immediately tested Matthew Hughes’ touch with a fierce strike that flew well wide – in fact, so far wide it ended up in the adjacent pitch’s net!

Matthew Hughes was full of energy, chasing down every ball and showing clear signs of improvement, though there is still work to do on his fundamentals. However, the half was not without controversy: Matthew raced out of position and committed a challenge that appeared racially motivated, yet the referee ignored the incident and issued no cards.

Tom Kennett was AFC Defib’s standout attacker in the first period – composed, focused, and creating all of our best chances, while also chipping in with vital defensive work. Behind him, Josh “Skinhead” Gillard delivered what can only be described as a budget Sergio Ramos performance: rock-solid at the back, cutting out danger, and marking key players out of the game. Hari Morgan in goal was rarely tested, but remained reliable when called upon.

The deadlock was broken when a Ball Bags player broke free down the right and slotted home off the post. Our first substitute appearance followed: debutant Aiden Gigg came on, and despite admitting he is no regular footballer, put in a superb defensive shift and gave the whole team a much-needed lift. Mckenzie Jones also entered the fray, looking far more confident going forward, causing chaos in the opposition defence and linking up brilliantly with Tom.

Just before half-time, The Ball Bags doubled their lead with a well-worked move, rounding both our goalkeeper and several defenders along the way – leaving us 2-0 down at the break.

Second Half

Defib came out fired up, but the tackle count rose sharply. Both Matthew and Josh were involved in dangerous challenges – Josh’s was particularly heavy, an incident that looked like an assault given the opponent had already been dispossessed by another defender. The referee again took a lenient approach, and the game remained tense from end to end.

Then came the moment that will be talked about for weeks: the Miss of the Season (and it’s only our first game!). We broke clear through the Ball Bags defence, sending Mckenzie and Aiden racing through one-on-one. Mckenzie’s initial shot was saved, but the rebound fell perfectly to debutant Aiden – just 7 yards out, open goal… and he sliced it so badly it nearly went out for a throw-in. Rumour has it he’s already browsing Vinted for new boots tonight.

Back at the other end, Mckenzie was beaten for pace, leaving us exposed to a 2-on-1 against Hari. But up stepped Alex Attwell with a crucial interception – and despite a momentary temptation to score his second own goal of the season, he cleared the danger brilliantly to keep us in the contest.

With time running out, Alex mis-hit a clearance that actually played Tom Kennett clean through. Tom took it in his stride and unleashed a lovely low finish that squeezed inside the near post – 1-2, and game on!

In the dying seconds, we threw everything forward. Josh Gillard – having the game of his life (and quite possibly the best game he will ever have) – played a perfect final pass that would have set up a last-gasp chance… only for the referee to blow for full-time. Josh later blamed the sun for the timing of the whistle – despite the sun being on the opposite side of the pitch.

Man of the Match: Josh Gillard

A truly commanding display at the back. He shut down danger, won every duel, and dominated his opponents all game. Only misses out on an 8.0 rating because he spent large parts of the match risking either a red card or a prison sentence.

Final Verdict: Much promise shown, plenty to work on – and moments that will go down in club legend. Onwards to the next one.
