Match Summary
AFC Defib started the game with a clear defensive game plan, looking to frustrate and disrupt their opponents from the very first whistle.
Hari Morgan put in a steady display between the sticks, securing a well-earned clean sheet. He made the routine saves he was expected to, and showed notable improvement with his distribution from the back.
Fresh back from his recent absence, Declan Mennell anchored the defence brilliantly. He put in a string of solid tackles, deployed his trademark "Tinkerbell spins" to block shots, and maintained excellent positioning throughout – though he’ll be looking to contribute more in an attacking sense in the next game.
Alex Attwell was as reliable as ever, marshalling the defensive line and winning his battles at several corners, and looked fully recovered from his troublesome ingrown toenail.
Tom Kennett was a crucial link between defence and attack. He worked tirelessly to track back and help out at the back, and came close to getting on the end of a couple of opportunities, only to be unlucky not to make contact.
Matthew Hughes put in an all-action display, running at full intensity from start to finish. He covered every blade of grass, tracked back relentlessly, and constantly harried the opposition defence to force errors – even if Defib couldn’t turn those mistakes into chances. He also provided the match’s comedy moment, getting into a tussle with the sideline netting much to the amusement of those watching.
When David Duffy entered the game, he added plenty of defensive steel and made some robust challenges, though he was unable to push forward as high as he’d have liked due to The Ball Bags’ own high press. He also very nearly caught their small, quick striker with a heavy challenge – thankfully stopping just short of sending him "back to Asia Brexit style"!
Mckenzie Jones continued his good form after coming on, pressing hard, holding up possession well and unsettling the opposition defence. He was desperately unlucky not to grab a winning goal for his side.
Verdict
A superb defensive performance from start to finish. Defib were unfortunate not to snatch all three points, but can also count themselves lucky they weren’t caught out on the counter. All in all, a very solid showing.
Man of the Match: Matthew Hughes
Awarded for his incredible work rate, non-stop tracking back, tough tackling and relentless pressing that set the tone for the whole team.
