DC Steamers hit the summit of East Division after beating FC Woodley 2-0 in a well fought contest.

Both DCS and Woodley went into this morning’s game with a 100% win record in league and cup this season but we took our chances and proved the victors.

We got off to a tough start with FC Woodley being the better of the 2 sides. DCS defended well with our midfield and defence winning the tackles. Our goalkeeper, Moore, made some important saves after a couple of defensive errors were pounced upon by the Woodley Strikers.

Steamers were forced to sit deep but looked to play out from the back with our threat coming from the wings. After weathering the storm Ide was unleashed down the left hand-side and was bought down near the edge of the box. Bert stood over the free kick and delivered a devilish ball, which Sam Wyatt dummied, to leave the keeper hopeless to watch it find the back of the net. 1-0!

There were 10 minutes to go till the end of the half and Steamers again defended like warriors to go into half-time with the lead.

We came out in the 2nd half with the same determination shown in the 1st and looked well organised across the pitch. Clifford, who was fairly stranded upfront, was causing a nuisance for their defence and holding it up well. We began to dominate more and created opportunities to go 2 up with Clifford going narrowly wide with a left footed shot. The back 4 continued to look organised and when they did falter Paul Moore was there with the save.

Our 2nd goal came with Jonny Clifford bursting down the right. With the Woodley defender coming across to tackle him Ide sprinted into the middle for Jonny to find him with a pin point cross. Ide tucked the ball away into the bottom left making the tricky finish look easy.

Courage replaced Fookes, who was on a yellow, and the extra creativity in midfield paid off as Steamers played tidy possession football. Steamers should have gone 3 up when Brad Gibson broke down the right side to supply a cross that needed any touch to go in. Jonny somehow missed it completely.

Morgan, returning from a recent back injury, replaced Brad at right back and continued where Brad had left off. Sam Hall played a pivotal role in time wasting as he replaced Jonny with a few minutes to go.

Steamers saw out the rest of the game but not before our man of the match keeper made a flying save. The win saw us go to the top of the table and keeps our 100% record intact.

Special mention to Mike Stepney and Ide who both had great games
