Heyside On Top

The first game of the new season played at Wright Robinson Sports College saw Heyside fight back from a 0-1 half time deficit to come out on top by 3 goals to 2 in a hard fought game against Clayton Villa.

The first half saw the Heyside boys creating and missing a host of chances and they could have been home and dry by the interval had they taken them. Jack had several attempts on goal that went narrowly wide or over the bar, Louis dragged a shot just wide of the post and Matty forced the keeper into making a good save so it was a real shock and much against the run of play when Clayton took the lead with one of their few raids into the Heyside half.

Joel and Lennon had been in complete control at the back and emergency keeper Luke did everything asked of him but this just showed the importance of taking your chances. Ryan showed some neat touches and worked hard to help out at both ends of the pitch. We had been well on top for much of the half but found ourselves trailing as the referee blew the half time whistle.

The second half began and immediately Heyside were back on level terms as Matty fired home a free kick past the keeper from outside the area. Minutes later Louis fired past the keeper to put Heyside in to the lead following a surging run from the half way line. Then Jack finally got the goal he deserved to make the score 3-1 and the game seemed to be in the bag. Louis then had to leave the field as he was unwell, in the circumstances he had played really well and deserves great credit for wanting to come and play the game even though he had hardly slept and had been ill for the previous few days. With no subs available this meant that the final 5 minutes or so were played with a player short so even though Clayton pressed and scored a late goal the Heyside team ended with a well deserved 3-2 victory.

MOM: Well done to all the boys today but thanks to his goal and a real hard working display Matty was a worthy winner of the award just edging it from skipper Lennon and defensive partner Joel.
