EA FC Wonderkids: The Best Young Players to Build Around

The best EA FC wonderkids are the young players whose potential sits way above their current rating. In FC 27, it usually means Lamine Yamal in his prime, then names like Pau Cubarsí, João Neves and Désiré Doué. What they cost you depends on the mode: Career Mode takes transfer budget, Ultimate Team takes coins.

Why Young Players Are the Smartest Signing in EA FC

If you watch loads of football, no doubt you have experienced the excitement that a young player can bring to a team. Now, in EA FC, you can develop your own young protégé and see how good he can become. A wonderkid in EA FC is a very young player with very high potential. “Potential” is the highest rating the game expects the player to reach at maturity. The “Overall” rating is the single figure that indicates how good he is right now. Most wonderkids have a large gap between the two ratings.

A 16-year-old with a rating around 70 will probably lose you a lot of games in the first couple of seasons, but over 3-4 years he could develop into the best player on the pitch for you. On a long save in Career Mode (the single-player mode where you run a club), this is what a rebuild looks like.

Note that the two modes pay for young players differently. In Career Mode, you spend your club's transfer budget. In Ultimate Team, the card-collecting mode, players are paid for in coins, and this selection of FC Ultimate Team coin listings is split by platform, with PC, Xbox and PlayStation versions all listed. This article focuses mostly on Career Mode, because that's where young players actually grow.

The Big Four Everyone Asks About

The 'Big Four' are, of course, the four most talked-about young players to sign to your squad in EA FC's Career Mode.

Lamine Yamal

The first wonderkid that you'll possibly come across is Lamine Yamal. A 95-potential right winger for Barcelona, and the teenage superstar playing for Barcelona and Spain in actual football is just as exciting. Given that he is the priciest of all the wonderkids in the game, I'd only recommend signing him on a save with a superclub like Barcelona or Bayern Munich. In Ultimate Team, his card will cost a pretty penny in coins too.

João Neves

João Neves is a central midfielder with wonderkid potential of 92, on track to become a top-class control midfielder. He'd be great for EA FC teams that need midfield control more than pace.

Désiré Doué

Désiré Doué is listed as a right winger with 91 potential, but he can also cover other attacking roles. In real life, he has turned up across the front line and through the middle, so he is one of the few young players who can step in straight away for injured attackers.

Pau Cubarsí

Pau Cubarsí (Barcelona, 91 potential) is a great center-back who is already playing for the first team. With great calm for his age, he plays out from the back and distributes the ball like a midfielder. I'd say he's the most solid young defender in the game. Ready to play now, and still has plenty of room for improvement.

Cheaper Prospects Who Grow Fast

Those four suit rich clubs. If you're managing a smaller side, the math changes. You want a low starting rating and a high ceiling, the kind of player nobody at your rivals has noticed yet. This is where the FC hidden gems are, and honestly where cheap FC wonderkids make a save, fun.

  • Francesco Camarda (ST): starts in the high 60s and can reach around 87. You'll need patience with him, but that growth gap is huge for a striker.

  • Gilberto Mora (CAM): rated in the mid-70s at 17, with potential around 87. A creative number 10 who can also drift out left.

  • Nathan De Cat (CDM): starts around 71, potential about 88. A holding midfielder for a proper long project.

  • Assane Diao (W): starts around 76, potential about 87. A wide player who can work either flank.

One honest warning. A cheap prospect is a bad fit for a club that has to win now. If the board wants a trophy this season, a striker in the high 60s won't get you there, however good he might look in five years. Timing matters too. In FC 27, a strong season can push a young player's value up quickly, so the best moment to sign one is before everyone else notices him.

How Growth Works Now

FC 27 reworked development, and it matters a lot if you're signing wonderkids. The headline change is Dynamic Potential, meaning a player's potential can move during your save depending on how they play. As Red Bull's look at the new Career Mode puts it, consistently strong form can raise a player's long-term ceiling, while a long run of poor performances can stall their progress. So the number on the scouting screen is a starting point. Not a promise.

Then there are Growth Profiles, which shape how fast players improve, when they reach their peak age and when they start to decline. According to a young player's guide from The Spike, FC 27 introduces six Growth Profiles. The practical upshot: two young talents with identical numbers can end up in very different places. One bursts through early, another keeps improving well past 25. That's FC potential explained in a sentence, really. It's a guide, not a fixed destination.

Here's the bit people skip. A wonderkid on the bench doesn't develop. Form, morale and playing time all feed into his rating, so signing three high-potential players for one position and rotating them doesn’t help them much. Pick the one you'll actually play. If there's no space, a loan is better than letting him sit on the bench.

Real Football Form vs Game Ratings

This part of EA FC is something a fan like me will really enjoy. A player's form is now built into his development in the game, so his real season becomes useful information. For example, a young player getting proper minutes for his club is a good sign for his real-life career and for how he's likely to be rated in the game. Conversely, a highly rated teenager left on the real-life bench is a warning sign, no matter how good his potential looks.

As an easy example of “real football form”, look at players like Yamal and Cubarsí, who came up through Barcelona's academy. Both became regular starters for the first team while still teenagers. Their EA FC ratings reflect their status as regular first-team players at one of the biggest clubs in the world. Any comparison of Barcelona against Real Madrid ends up on young talent sooner or later, since one club tends to grow its own and the other likes to sign teenagers early.

EA has its own schedule for updating player ratings, so real form won't decide everything, but I'd rather sign an FC career mode wonderkid who starts every week in real life than one who doesn't. Morale (how happy a player is at your club) also plays a big part in how he looks in matches, and a happy player who is playing regularly tends to perform better than someone who is unhappy and not playing as much.

The left column is for clubs with money. The right column is where I'd spend my time. Small note on Mikey Moore: the game lists him mainly as a left winger, with central midfield as one of his other positions, so treat him as a flexible option there rather than a pure CM.

End Of My EA FC Wonderkids Rant

I think you get a far more interesting storyline out of turning an unknown teenager into the captain of your team. Yamal is a brilliant player, but signing him for a huge price tag is not really what I want to do in a game of this sort. The most interesting wonderkids are rarely the most famous ones. Following Real Madrid's latest transfer talk is interesting too, and it shows how much money is involved in football at the highest level. But you don't win a long Career Mode save with that kind of money. It's the cheapest high-potential player in your squad that makes it all worth playing.
