Introduction
League One, also known as Sky Bet League One for sponsorship purposes, is the second-highest division of the English Football League and the third tier overall in the English football league system. It is contested by 24 clubs, with each club playing each other twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 46 matches per season. The top two clubs at the end of the season are automatically promoted to the Championship, while the third-placed club goes into a playoff with the winners of the two League Two semi-finals. The bottom four clubs are relegated to League Two.
History
League One was formed in 2004 as part of a major restructuring of the English football league system. It replaced the old Third Division, which had been the third tier of English football since 1920. The first season of League One was played in 2004-05, with the winners being Rotherham United.

League One has been won by a total of 10 clubs since its inception. The most successful club is Swindon Town, who have won the league three times. Other clubs to have won the league include Charlton Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday, and Portsmouth.
