League One, known as Sky Bet League One for sponsorship purposes, is the second-highest division of the English Football League and the third tier overall in the English football league system.
It is contested by 24 clubs, with each team playing each other twice, once at home and once away. The top two teams at the end of the season are automatically promoted to the Championship, while the third-placed team goes into the playoffs with the winners also being promoted.
The bottom four teams are relegated to League Two.
The league was formed in 1992 as a result of the restructuring of the English football league system. It was originally called the Third Division, but was renamed League One in 2004.
The most successful club in League One history is Sunderland, who have won the title eight times. Other notable winners include Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday, and Charlton Athletic.
The current season of League One began on 30 July 2022 and is scheduled to end on 6 May 2023. The current champions are Rotherham United.
The current top scorers in the league are Cole Stockton of Fleetwood Town and Charlie Wyke of Sunderland, who have both scored 12 goals.
