Burghfield Blues 1 vs 3 Binfield Lions

Match report by; Rob Mack This was the Semi-final of the EBFL Cup; Burghfield Blues, at the top of the League vs Binfield Lions at the other end of the table; we knew it was going to be a great game of football! The last time we played Burghfield, we were up 2-nil at half time so we were quietly confident that we could win; if we defended well and outpaced their defence. In the training session before, we played a mini match against our under 11’s + Bobby, with the sole purpose of getting our midfield and defence to work at 120%, marking and intercepting like demons. Which worked like a dream for the game against Burghfied!   When the game started, Burghfield immediately piled on pressure, as expected; but were thwarted at every attempt so they did not have a serious strike at goal. Harvey, Hazza, OH, CAM, Jack and TJ were intercepting the attacks before the Blues could have a decent shot at Goal, so Joe could easily deal with  anything coming his way. The Lions, played an aggressive defending game, attacking the oncoming Players, not giving them time to pass, marking and not giving them space to pass or run into. Our players marked the opposition better than we had ever done before.   After 10 minutes of solid defending; Ollie picked up the ball a few yards from our goal area, skilled past two of the Blues Best Players,   sprinted past their defenders, into the Blues Box, The Blues Goalie ran out to close him down, but Ollie placed a magnificent ball past the keeper and the three  chasing defenders into the back of the net. A Fabulous goal and a great boost to the team! Lions 1 – Blues 0   Within a minute, the Blues had their first good strike at goal, but this was easily caught and held by Joe! A great save as he had a Burghfield Player bearing down on him at great speed! We then had a free kick to defend, that was soon cleared by some fast feet making sure the Blues players did not get a touch.   From this point on, the whole dynamics of the game changed; from the Lions mostly defending, we went on the attack! But we knew it would not be easy! We started pushing the ball into the opposition half with runs down the wings by TJ, OH, Jack and Ollie with great work being done in midfield by Harvey, TJ, OH and Hazza. Cam took a pretty severe knock on the leg whilst intercepting the ball.   Half Time Lions 1 – Blues 0 We started the 2nd Half with a great run down the wing by TJ, to assert immediate pressure. Jack, Cam, Harvey and Hazza had moved our defence up close to the halfway line and were attacking everything that came anywhere near them, at the same time, making sure any stray attackers were marked. The Blues Broke and took a long shot that was part intercepted by OH; Joe dove for that ball and stopped it; as the Blues Number 8 was about to hit the rebound, Joe flicked the ball away from his strike so his boot swiped through fresh air! Joe grabbed the ball lightning fast! Another Great Save!   We then had a broad attack; with Hazza and Ollie down the left wing, with OH leading in the centre waiting for the pass; Hazza drew a defender away from Ollie, this gave Ollie the space to skill past a Blues midfielder and push the Ball to OH who was then barged off the ball to win a free kick. OH took another amazing free kick, dropping the ball right on Harvey’s head in the Goal, Harvey; at the last millisecond, got his head out the way and the ball whizzed in the back of the net. This was an amazing team effort, If Harvey had not stood where he was, the goalie would have simply caught the ball! A Great Team Goal! Lions 2 – Blues 0   We had barely finished celebrations, when the Blues came back on the attack, the first strike saved by Joe; from the goal kick, we lost the ball and the Blues got another shot from close range; Joe save the first strike, but they managed to score on the rebound. Joe made an amazing leap across the goal and was very unlucky not to have saved it. A Great Effort Joe! A big lesson to our players; make sure you position yourself for the cross into the box and the goalie rebound! Lions 2 – Blues 1   The Lions were back on the attack and we had some great passing from Ollie, to Hazza, to TJ, to OH who had another strike at goal; saved by the Goalie. The ball rebounded across the net; TJ beat two defenders, passed back to Hazza, who skilled past a defender, then crossed to OH who flew into the  Box to plant the ball in the bottom corner.; A fantastic piece of Football. Lions 3 – Blues 1   We had a few more strikes at Goal by Ollie, TJ, Hazza, with great midfield work by Harvey Cam and Jack pouncing on attackers, not giving them space to run or pass; OH took another shot, the goalie saved, Harvey hit the rebound which hit the post and bounced back into play, giving the Burghfield Coaches dozens more grey hairs! Almost 4 – 1 a few times in the last seconds of the game!   At 11:54hrs The Final whistle went!
