Binfield Lions 0 vs 1 Finchampstead Athletic

In the previous Lions v Finchampstead match, a Sleepy bunch of Lions suffered a 7-0 defeat. Knowing we will face the same team in the cup final, we had to make sure that we did not have a repeat performance. Finchampstead has 3 Reading FC Advanced players so we knew they could be dangerous if let loose!   Finchampstead, started with a confident attack down the left wing and a long ball to their striker who had sprinted into our goal area. Joe made sure he did not connect! They kept up the pressure for the next 3 minutes, with some great defending by Joe, Hazza, CAM, Ollie and OH. We started to counter attack with OH putting a long ball up to Ollie who forced Finch to pass back to their goalie… the ball flying over the goal! (If only!J). The resulting Corner gave CAM a strike at goal which was bounced back at him for a second strike. Again Finch defended well. OH, Hazza and TJ started moving our defence up to the midfield and taking the game back to Finch.  Moments later, Finch were  back on the attack; OH went up to block the strike; Bobby chased their left winger (who was running into open space) from their Half, Joe made another good save and pushed the ball back up to OH and Bobby making a run on the right wing. From OH’s throw-in, Bobby skilled past two defenders and place a neat cross to Ollie who had a good strike at goal, slightly deflected by a defender.   The Finch Goalie placed a long kick that resulted in their right winger taking another shot at goal, fortunately Hazza was on his case and the shot missed. A Minute later, Joe was diving across the goal at another long shot by a Finch midfielder. 25 seconds later, another shot! Joe and our defence was working double time! OH put a long ball up to Bobby who managed to outpace the Finch defender down to Finch’s corner flag. As Bobby turned to cross the Ball to Harvey, the defender caught up, ran across Bobby’s path, then managed to clear the ball back up field; Finch had another shot at goal; saved again! Joe played another long ball to Bobby, who this time, left the Finch defender behind and managed to get the cross to Harvey who chipped the ball over a Finch defender for TJ to take a shot. A Defender barged TJ as he took the shot so it went just over the bar. It was another fantastic piece of football!   The Lions were starting to really pressure Finch. TJ won the ball from the goal kick and made another run down the left wing, with Jack, Bobby & Harvey in Support, looking for the cross! Bobby & Jack made another run down the Wing, skilling the defender and crossing to Harvey; sadly intercepted by the goalie! Finch counter attacked several times but were thwarted by OH, Jack, Hazza, TJ and Bobby. Hazza and Jack tackled a Finch Striker, Jack passed to TJ on the left wing, who hit a perfect long ball for Bobby and Harvey to run onto. Bobby took the shot as his favourite pesky Finch defender was bearing down on him; the shot was just over the bar. Another long ball seen Harvey racing towards goal; unfortunately the Finch Goalie came out to collect it. Very Close! Finch rolled the ball out which saw Ollie Skill the defender and take a shot that almost ended up in the top corner; Harvey nearly got in to hit the rebound from the keeper. Hazza had another good run down the wing and took a long shot at the bottom corner; saved!   The First Half ended Nil-Nil; what a fabulous effort by every single player on the field   In the second half, it was Jack & Cam’s turn up front, Harvey, Hazza, OH and Ollie in midfield with Bobby and TJ in defence. Finch immediately attacked  and every one of our players worked harder than ever to keep Finch out and get the ball back up the field; resulting in good runs down the wings and centre by Harvey, Hazza, OH, CAM and Jack. The whole of the second half was attack, counter-attack, back and forward, with great football from both sides. In the last moments of the match, a cross into the box seen a Finch striker just get his toe to the ball and just push the ball out of Joe’s reach to score the only game of the match. Binfield Nil – Finchampstead 1.   In the second half, there was just too many intercepts, tackles, passes, runs down the wings, the centre, passes into the box, shots at goal, saves by both teams to mention in this report. E.g., A good pass from OH and CAM was so close to scoring when he sprinted from the halfway line, into the box and just as he was about to shoot, felt a tug on his shoulder, causing his shot to go just wide of the post. All our players exceeded themselves.   It was great to see that we were, attacking on a broad front, giving our wingers options to pass to as they were run down the wings. It was also reassuring that we were marking Finch attackers, intercepting crosses and playing the ball back to our strikers.
