An enthralling cup tie against a very strong Pinewood team, although it wasnt for the feint hearted i think our battling qualities just about saw us over the line.
After hyping the game up for weeks the boys arrived at the earlier meet time (well some did anyway) to get organised in preperation for the match, a real desire was evident amongst the players. Binfield kicked-off and almost made the perfect start when after playing a give and go with TJ Harvey rode a couple of challenges to hit a drive off the foot of the post with the keeper planted to the spot and we hadnt got to the 1st minute yet!! That prooved to be a false dawn as Pinewood game more into the game as a couple of their players sensed an upset, the wingers in particular were causing us alot of problems. The attacking game that was being played against us was causing us to have problems getting forward, we were restricted to the odd break down the wing which were effective. The deadlock was broken when after trying to clear our lines the ball was presented to a Pinewood midfielder who drove forward and unleashed a shot into the bottom corner - 0-1. Chances were at a premium as both teams were playing hard but fair and competing for the ball with full force, Harvey again went close after a lovely flick from OH - a yard either side and a goal would have been inevitable. Ollie started to come into the match and was unlucky to see an effort cannon off OH when goal bound, Jack made a lovely run late in the half and beat at least 4 players but with the angle against him and no support he was forced to shoot when the play deserved more. Joe & Cam were wary but comfortable with Pinewoods attacking threats, Harry & Tom were full of running down the wings and although we were down we were not out. H/T 0-1.
At half time we asked for a bit of urgency and reminded them that they were 20 mins from going out of the cup, we seemed to step up a gear in the 2nd and it looked a matter of time until we scored, it also seemed that we were dealing with their attacking threats much better and not giving the ball away as much. Harry was starting to impact the match and fizzed a lovely cross across goal which we couldnt convert but that seemed to spur us on, TJ then got in on the act when picked the ball up out side our box and side stepped a couple of strong challenges to stay on his foot and whipped the ball into the danger area for the unfortuate defender to put into hi own net - the run anf challenges forced TJ off but at least we were back in the game, 1-1. The momentum was definately with the home side as they went in search of a winner, Harry had a decent effort go narrowly wide and OH was starting to impose himself again, Harvey, Jack, Cam & Olli were battling hard to win the ball and Joe was authoritive in goal. As the game approached its finally we sent TJ back on 'to get the winner' and with 6 mins to go that is exactly what he did!! A long free kick from OH caused confusion in the Pinewood box and the ball broke to TJ who took a touch and cracked a right footed drive into the far corner of the net, 2-1. We saw out the last minutes of the game with no real scare and was probably a fair result on the balance of play, we now go into the last 16 with a tie against Twyford Comets in December.
A special well done to Jack who was MOM with some great tackles and briliant support play, its back to the league on Saturday with a home match against AFC Charvil.
