Match report

1/12/2019 at Pelhams Greenfields v Brangore

A very cold morning ! Too cold ! All boys had a good attitude in the warmup and only a few little petulant moments however, such an improvement to what it has been. Well done boys.

We have been working in training on being aware of space and awareness, not only for yourself, your team mates and opposition. Playing the way you face and not to turn into trouble. To keep it simple, be in a position where your team mates can see you and not sprint away from the game.

I felt going into this game, that we’d put on a good performance. We had a really tight game earlier in the season against these and we were looking forward to seeing how far we’d come.

We started with Caleb in goal, Ronnie, Harry at the back, Finnley on the right, Frankie in the middle, Joe on the left and Harvey at top.

Game started at a fast pace from both teams and some slick passing from Greenfields. I think our boys lost their discipline a little and getting drawn to the ball too often, can’t remember too much on the lead up to their first goal which was from a free kick of which I didn’t feel was a foul! Thought the ref was poor today but, they’re volunteers and we should respect their decisions.

We were playing some good football in parts with joe in particular, who caught my eye on many occasions with his commitment, first touch, and link up play. Good work joe ! At times, we weren’t linking up well, not holding up the ball, playing the way you face and often turning into trouble and being hit on the break. This has been happening too much up the pitch and we need to work on this in training. As we played more we did create some good chances but, couldn’t find a finish. Caleb made some great saves on 6 and 10 minutes. I think at this point, if we found a goal, we could of been right back init but, they scored on ten minutes and we’re now 2-0 down! We made some changes Charles coming on for Ronnie and jack for Finnley. Within minutes we are now 3-0 down! Boys kept pushing and played some nice football and Harvey was put through and the shot agonisingly hit the cross bar ! Boys continued to battle on and Harvey came close again minutes later. Any other day this would of been 3-2 and game on !

Greenfields were looking very sharp today with quick passing and countering quickly. They hit us hard with this and having missed a few chances we now found ourselves 4-0 down at half time.

We tried to pick the boys up at half time as it was evident their heads had dropped. We told them to fight for every dead ball and never give up.

We started with Brook up front, Finnley on the right, jack on the left, Ronnie and Charles at the back and Frank ‘The tank’ in centre midfield. We were doing ok in spells, however often getting caught with the ball and hit on the break. I can’t Remember too much of their goals, what I do remember is we conceded 3 goals in 4 minutes. They were good goals and the fault was of the team as opposed to individual errors, and we will all learn from it and push on.

We made some more changes with jack coming off for Harry who moved at the back and Charles into right midfield. We had to stop them and Charles loves doing that ! Finnley was switched to the left as we thought his pace would help us on the break. At this point we were 7-0 down. As the game moved on we thought we were becoming more competitive and we hit them on the break and lovely assist from Brook put Finn in, who run on, waited for the keeper to commit and slotted past. Was a great finish from Finnley and great assist from Brook. Well done boys. At 7-1 and as soon as we scored they went up the other end and scored ?? seems everything they hit today would go in ! I We soldiered on and with Finnley breaking up play and ran forward with the ball with some skill and driving forward he was brought down from behind, with two of their players falling on top of him, he face planted the floor! Clearly Shaken and hurt and with a bleeding nose we had to replace Finn with Jack. And still we didn’t get a free kick ! We continued to push for another goal and Jack was fouled ( one of the few the ref gave us today) we asked Brook to take free kick as he hit them so sweet and he didn’t disappoint with a great finish! As soon as we scored they went up the other end and got got another ! This happens in football and was one of those days for us. They then went up the other end and scored.

The game finished at 9-2.

I think at times we showed some good football but we need to keep the ball better further up the pitch. Too many time we lose the ball up the field and we have to work on that.

The boys were clearly upset coming off. Was a bad day at the office but as we always say “ you learn more from losing then winning”. Told the boys brush yourselves off and we go again.

Was a tough game to watch today, I think the ref was clearly biased today. I think four of their goals game from free kicks awarded by him and one of their goals was a clear push on jack! Anyway, no excuses! they were the better side today. Moving forward we need to work on holding the ball up and bringing others into play from midfield to attack and attack to midfield etc.

We will be back stronger and better next week.

We decided to award Finnley with man of the match. He worked hard, made some good runs, tracked back and got a good goal with a great finish. Brook also deserves a mention with one assist and one goal. Well done lads.

Up the gore.
