League

2nd October 10

We needed to get things right in this game as All Claims will be facing us again very quickly in the cup. It was time to put down a marker in the league and to put down a marker with the opposition. I think we did both we controlled most of the game and fought hard for our 50 – 50’s, Neil leading the way with some great thundering headers and tackles when required.

We also needed to make sure when we went in front we stayed in front by defending for our lives for the next 5 minuets, we failed at that miserably. To be honest we allowed a long ball over our entire defence and the freedom of Southend to All claims midfield to go charging through our centre and slide an easy chance past a stranded keeper. I wasn’t impressed at all at that resistance.

To be honest our goal might well have been offside, but it was finished with aplomb. Lee Bryant smashing his second goal in two games seemed to have an age when he broke the offside trap raced into the area and hit the roof of the net.

Of course I felt we could go on and win if we could just get our foot on the ball and impose ourselves. To be honest losing Dan H so fast in the second half was a blow but it did offer the management the change to change the shape a little and offer us the opportunity to play more on the counter, spreading the ball to the wings and stretching the compact defence of our opponents.

So much so that with the change of tactics we saw more space building behind both full back and this is one of the reasons I think Frosty found some space behind the right full back. He then neatly turned and simply put it into the top right corner of the goal, I say simply he made it look simple and that type of finish was not only a joy to watch but also a worthy match winner.

There was a late onslaught an Karl had to make a couple of fine sots one of which I feel secured all the points for us, but in general I think we played well enough to get our win and set us up for the same opponents in the league in a few weeks. The bench today was one of the strongest I think we have seen and on this evidence I think we are destined for a good year.

We have put down a marker now and we need to protect it. This season will be a long and hard one with wins like this I feel we should be able to make our hard work offer us a worthy prize we just cant slacken off or lose our focus like we did for the goal.
