Southend Charity Cup

13th November 2010

When we started today’s game I felt we had not only the experience but the skill and the determination to grind out an uncomfortable win. True the game took a turn for the worse about 15 mins in when the full back and goal keeper made a vital error to let in a very grateful striker to score in an empty net. Then we gave away a incredible soft penalty when the full back and the keeper couldn’t control another lone striker situation but we had crafted chances and missed a Penalty.

The first half then was perhaps the wrong result for the effort put in, to be honesty after the restart we looked like we wanted to make amends and started well, better than we actually started the game. So we seemed to accept we needed to up our game. To be honest lads we need to up our game straight away not when we looking down the barrel of a gun and two nil head start. We were better than the opponents in every department except one HEART.

I mentioned right at the start of the day  we couldn’t afford to get involved in a war and needed to ping the ball about, we didn’t and in all honesty if you think this report in harsh think about the game, isn’t it harsh to lose to a team so much less technical and intelligent than we could be. Do you want to be a team like Sunderland or Chelsea, one full of hard work, graft and energy the other ‘better team’ losing 3-0 at home? We lost today because I feel we didn’t have belief, passion and determination. A good analogy of our efforts on Saturday is; you could be the worlds best solider but if you’re not in the army you wont get the recognition you deserve. In real terms you can be better than the rest but without hard team work and passion you’re just another ordinary player, or to put it one last way a single player is easy to beat a team far harder. Currently we lose to teams not clubs with a few players, period.

There were errors all over the pitch but not just by us the opponents made them, we just wanted to pass the effort or the blame elsewhere. The managers made mistakes in this game to I believe but that isn’t why we lost. I recall a game last week where I had 3 people outshining the rest, I saw people running their hearts out to carve out an opportunity for some one else, I don’t believe I saw that this week as much I also think I saw people thinking it was over at 4-1 down. Wrong opponents do not stop, opponents want to drive in the nail and laugh at you, which I remember the opponents doing today. I don’t want this to happen again, I don’t want to feel that we were beat by a group of better motivated people than what we are…….

On the flip side we saw some things I class as a positive Charlie’s first Corinthian goal from a well flighted Parker Free kick, this at least gave us 3 minuets of hope to get it to 2-1 but in general lads we need to come prepared and pumped or get another kicking next week, that’s something I don’t want to happen so…….

We need to make a decision so early into the season do we draft in the players we need to make a tougher chance for a start in the first team or do we say to each other this isn’t good enough and WE need to dig our selves out of a hole were starting to dig. I’ll be honest I cant make that decision yet as I have just as much belief in you guys as Ben does but were better than were playing so why are we not playing to our standard……One word lads HEART.
