DC Steamers progressed to the 2nd round of the Industrial Cup after beating a stubborn Wokingham & Emmbrook side 4-2.

Steamers didn’t get off to a good start as the manager made a hash of the starting line-up and this poor work continued on the pitch. A Sam Allardyce long ball game put Wokingham 1 up when we failed to deal with the goalkeeper’s punt up field. The ball sailed over our defence and Paul was left stranded when the striker applied a neat lob. Paul made a great save to prevent Wokingham going 2 up and it was the wakeup call we needed in defence to get ourselves started.

We were only 5 minutes in and Wokingham seemed happy to sit back and soak up the pressure. We attacked with some great passing but efforts from Sam Wyatt, Jonny Clifford and a header from Scaldie were either missed or saved. Jonny Clifford was brought down in the box and we were awarded a penalty. Jonny stepped up to take it but he rattled the bar. Jonny has since taken himself off penalty duties. It looked like it wasn’t going to be our day.

We kept on playing great football as we knew one had to go in and Jonny converted after 30 minutes. Sam Wyatt applied a clever flick from centre mid for Jonny to run at and pass the centre back before smashing bottom left. It was a relief and we ended the half all square.

DCS came out in the second half as they finished the first. Bert Ryan and Sam Wyatt were owning the centre of the park, gliding past their midfield and finding our strikers with clever passes. Ryan Horton came on to replace Andy Hutchings as he was unable to continue after taking the ball straight in the pods.

We took the lead through Jonny Clifford and a pass from Ollie? Found Jonny who jinxed his way through the defence and found the back of the net (I can’t really remember the details but that will do).

Through our domination Wokingham somehow equalised as their striker converted a deep cross with a clever header. We continued to press and the W&E keeper had a bit of a shocker as JP’s looping header was simply palmed in. He is obviously a nutter as not a single Wokingham player moaned or questioned his dodgy keeping.

The game was dead and buried when a calamitous display of shooting across the goal line by JP and Ollie was eventually converted by the pocket-sized striker. Pictures are now in the press with him celebrating his tap-in in Vegas.

Owen Temple replaced JP after being rested due to birthday celebrations the night before. #RFerris13 was introduced with 10 to go and almost got an assist for his efforts.

DCS will now face a tough side in Burghfield for round 2.

MOTM goes to Bert Ryan for dictating play from centre midfield. Shout-out to Sam Wyatt who narrowly missed out.
