SYL Blacks hosted 303 Polish Soccer U12 Red at the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus on 12 September 2026, with kick-off at 10:30am in a 9-a-side cup match. The home side emerged victorious with a 2-0 win after a competitive 60 minutes plus injury time.
SYL Blacks lined up in a 3-4-1 formation, deploying three defenders at the back: Caiden Brennan on the right, Rais Quartey centrally, and Aiden Nsah on the left. The midfield quartet featured Ollie Strachan on the right, Oliver Harvey and Yaseen Lamin centrally, and Ralphy Spicer on the left. Leading the line was striker Trey Grant, supported just behind him by the midfielders. This setup was designed to provide defensive solidity with three at the back, while the midfield four aimed to control possession and supply the lone striker. The substitutes available were Buddy Sanders, Leon Sanders, Harrison Ogden and Yusef Oyeniyan.
The match began with SYL Blacks asserting early control. The first breakthrough came in the 16th minute when Trey Grant capitalised on a precise short pass from Ollie Strachan inside the box, calmly slotting home with his left foot to give the hosts the lead. This goal set the tone for the rest of the first half.
Shortly after the opener, SYL Blacks made a flurry of tactical substitutions in the 20th minute. Buddy Sanders replaced Ollie Strachan on the right midfield, Leon Sanders came on for right defender Caiden Brennan, Harrison Ogden took over from left defender Aiden Nsah, and Yusef Oyeniyan replaced central midfielder Oliver Harvey. These changes suggested a strategic reshuffle aimed at maintaining intensity and balance across the pitch.
Despite the changes, SYL Blacks continued to press forward. In the 29th minute, Ralphy Spicer doubled the advantage with a speculative strike from outside the box. Receiving space on the right, Spicer unleashed a right-footed cross/shot that flew beyond the goalkeeper, extending the lead to 2-0 just before half-time.
The first half concluded at the 30-minute mark with SYL Blacks comfortably ahead, having controlled much of the game and created the clearest chances.
The second half saw further tactical substitutions from SYL Blacks at the 40th minute. Caiden Brennan returned to the right defender position, replacing central midfielder Yaseen Lamin. Ollie Strachan was reintroduced on the right midfield in place of Ralphy Spicer, while Oliver Harvey came back into central midfield, substituting Rais Quartey in defence. Additionally, Aiden Nsah returned to left defender, replacing Yusef Oyeniyan. These changes appeared designed to refresh the side’s defensive and midfield lines while maintaining attacking options.
Later in the match, at the 52nd minute, Yusef Oyeniyan was brought back on, replacing Caiden Brennan once again, indicating continued tactical adjustments to manage the game’s tempo and defensive shape.
Throughout the match, SYL Blacks demonstrated disciplined defending and effective attacking transitions, ensuring 303 Polish Soccer U12 Red were unable to find a way back into the contest. The home side’s goalkeeper, Alan Szular, remained alert and composed, contributing to a clean sheet.
Ralphy Spicer’s influential performance, highlighted by his crucial second goal and overall midfield presence, earned him the player of the match accolade. His ability to strike from distance and support both defence and attack was pivotal in securing the win.
The referee, an under-18 official, managed the game with a steady hand, allowing the match to flow despite a moderate performance level.
In front of a modest crowd of 24 spectators, SYL Blacks secured a confident 2-0 victory to progress in the cup, showcasing tactical flexibility and clinical finishing at the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus.
