SYL U12 Blacks hosted Santos U12 Tecnica in a lively U12 league encounter at the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus on 10 October 2026, kicking off promptly at 10:30am. The 9-a-side match saw SYL U12 Blacks secure a commanding 6-2 victory over their visitors in a 60-minute contest, much to the delight of the 50-strong crowd.
Deploying a 2-4-2 formation, SYL U12 Blacks set up with Alan Szular guarding the goal. The defensive line featured Rais Quartey and Aiden Nsah as central defenders, tasked with protecting the backline and initiating play from the back. Ahead of them, the midfield quartet comprised Harrison Ogden on the left, Caiden Brennan on the right, with Leon Sanders and Ralphy Spicer occupying central midfield roles, expected to control the tempo and link defence with attack. Up front, the two forwards, Trey Grant on the left and Ollie Strachan on the right, were charged with leading the offensive efforts and capitalising on chances. The substitutes available were Buddy Sanders, Yaseen Lamin, and Oliver Harvey, ready to be called upon as the match unfolded.
The game burst into life early on as Trey Grant opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Ralphy Spicer’s precise short pass set Grant up perfectly, allowing him to slot home a close-range finish with his left foot, signalling SYL’s attacking intent. Just five minutes later, the Blacks doubled their lead through a well-executed header from Leon Sanders. Assisted by a deft cross from Trey Grant, Sanders rose to meet the ball and power it home from close range, demonstrating the team’s aerial threat.
At the quarter-hour mark, SYL made a trio of tactical substitutions, bringing on Buddy Sanders for Ollie Strachan, Yaseen Lamin replacing Leon Sanders, and Oliver Harvey coming on for Ralphy Spicer. These changes aimed to refresh the midfield and forward lines without disrupting the team’s rhythm.
The new-look SYL side continued to press, and in the 25th minute, Oliver Harvey showcased his set-piece prowess by curling a direct free-kick from outside the box into the net with his right foot, extending the lead to 3-0. However, Santos U12 Tecnica responded swiftly. Two quick goals in the space of three minutes brought them back into the contest. The first was a scrappy close-range finish following a goalmouth scramble, while the second came from a skilful lob over the goalkeeper, both executed with the right foot. These strikes reduced the deficit to 3-2 and injected renewed energy into the visitors.
SYL reacted promptly with further tactical substitutions at the 30-minute mark, reinstating Ollie Strachan for Yaseen Lamin, bringing back Leon Sanders for Oliver Harvey, and reintroducing Ralphy Spicer in place of Caiden Brennan. These moves restored the original midfield balance and ensured fresh legs for the second half. The referee signalled half-time shortly after these changes, with the scoreline standing at 3-2 in favour of SYL U12 Blacks.
The second half began with SYL U12 Blacks asserting their dominance once more. In the 35th minute, Trey Grant notched his second goal of the match, finishing off a slick team move with a close-range right-footed strike, assisted by Ollie Strachan’s short pass. This goal re-established a two-goal cushion and lifted the home side’s spirits.
Substitutions continued to shape the game as Yaseen Lamin replaced Harrison Ogden in the 36th minute, maintaining midfield energy. Later, at the 50-minute mark, Caiden Brennan returned to the pitch for Rais Quartey, and Oliver Harvey came back on for Aiden Nsah, signalling a tactical reshuffle aimed at consolidating the lead and adding attacking impetus.
The substitutions paid dividends almost immediately. In the 51st minute, Trey Grant completed his hat-trick, expertly finishing inside the box with his left foot following a neat short pass from Yaseen Lamin. Two minutes later, Ralphy Spicer, who had been influential throughout, added a fifth goal for SYL with a composed right-footed finish, assisted by Oliver Harvey’s quick pass.
With the game well in hand, SYL made one final tactical substitution in the 55th minute, bringing Harrison Ogden back on for the tiring Trey Grant. The Blacks maintained control for the remainder of the match, seeing out the final minutes with composure and discipline.
Ralphy Spicer’s all-round performance, orchestrating play from central midfield and contributing both assists and a goal, earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match accolade. The Under 18 referee managed the game effectively, ensuring a fair contest throughout.
In summary, SYL U12 Blacks produced a commanding display at home, blending tactical astuteness with clinical finishing to overcome Santos U12 Tecnica 6-2. The early goals set the tone, and despite a brief resurgence from the visitors, the Blacks’ quality and depth proved decisive in this entertaining league encounter.
