On Saturday 3rd October 2026, SYL U12 Blacks welcomed TFA U12 Blacks to the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus for a 9-a-side cup fixture, kicking off at 10:30am. The home side produced a commanding performance to secure a comprehensive 5-0 victory over their visitors in a match that lasted 60 minutes plus added time. The Under 18 referee officiated the game with a solid display, overseeing a contest witnessed by 20 spectators.
SYL U12 Blacks lined up in a 3-4-1 formation, deploying three defenders, four midfielders, and a lone striker. Alan Szular took his place between the sticks as goalkeeper, shielded by a defensive trio consisting of Rais Quartey at right defender, Leon Sanders centrally, and Aiden Nsah on the left. The midfield quartet featured Oliver Harvey on the right, Yaseen Lamin and Ollie Strachan occupying central midfield roles, and Ralphy Spicer on the left flank. Leading the line was striker Trey Grant, tasked with converting chances created by his teammates. The formation suggested a balanced approach, with the wide midfielders expected to provide width and support both defence and attack, while the central midfielders would look to control the tempo and link play. Caiden Brennan and Yusef Oyeniyan were named as substitutes, ready to influence proceedings when called upon.
The match began with SYL U12 Blacks asserting control, but tactical substitutions at the 20-minute mark altered the dynamic significantly. Caiden Brennan replaced Ralphy Spicer on the left midfield, while Yusef Oyeniyan came on for Oliver Harvey on the right midfield, both changes made for tactical reasons. These fresh legs quickly made an impact.
Just six minutes after the substitutions, at the 26th minute, the breakthrough arrived. Caiden Brennan delivered a precise cross into the box, which striker Trey Grant expertly tapped in with his left foot from close range, giving the home side a deserved 1-0 lead. The goal was a testament to the effective wing play and clinical finishing that SYL U12 Blacks had been building towards.
As the first half drew to a close, the home side maintained their dominance and went into the break with a slender advantage. The halftime whistle came at the 30-minute mark with SYL U12 Blacks leading 1-0.
The second half saw SYL U12 Blacks continue to press forward. At the 36th minute, Yusef Oyeniyan, who had come on earlier, provided a well-timed cross into the box, which Ollie Strachan converted with a close-range finish using his right foot. This goal doubled the lead and further unsettled TFA U12 Blacks.
Shortly after, at the 40th minute, SYL U12 Blacks made two more tactical substitutions. Ralphy Spicer returned to the field, replacing Yaseen Lamin in central midfield, while Oliver Harvey was reintroduced on the right midfield in place of Ollie Strachan. These changes aimed to refresh the midfield and maintain the team’s attacking impetus.
The home side’s third goal came just before the 43rd minute. Rais Quartey, operating from his right defender position, unleashed a long-range effort with his right foot that fortuitously found its way into the net. Although described as a fluke, the goal extended SYL U12 Blacks’ lead to 3-0 and demonstrated the threat posed by defenders joining the attack.
At the 50th minute, further tactical substitutions were made. Ollie Strachan returned to replace Rais Quartey, while Yaseen Lamin came back on to take over from Aiden Nsah at left defender. These adjustments ensured the team’s structure remained solid while keeping players fresh for the final stages.
The visitors struggled to respond as SYL U12 Blacks continued to dominate possession and create chances. At the 52nd minute, Leon Sanders capitalised on a cross from Caiden Brennan to score a close-range tap-in with his right foot, adding a fourth goal to the tally. This goal highlighted the defenders’ involvement in attack and the effectiveness of the wide players in delivering quality service.
The final goal of the match arrived at the 55th minute when Caiden Brennan himself found the net. After receiving a short pass from Trey Grant inside the box, Brennan calmly finished with his right foot, rounding off a fine individual and team performance. This goal sealed a resounding 5-0 victory for SYL U12 Blacks.
Caiden Brennan’s influence was pivotal throughout the match, earning him the player of the match accolade for his assists, goal, and overall contribution after coming off the bench. The home side’s tactical substitutions and fluid 3-4-1 formation proved decisive in overwhelming TFA U12 Blacks and securing a dominant cup win on home soil.
