After a long 4 week absence with no game we was in Cup action today against Willows Fc a team a legue below sitting top. The game started exactly how we wanted it with us instantly on the front foot, an early Ryan Smith Free kick was put expertly into the box and Curran connected with a looping header which the keeper scrambled back to touch it over for a corner. From the resulting corner Curran crossed in for Dave Leslie to plant a header just wide of the target, Lezza looked annoyed he never got on the score sheet but that soon changed when moments later he netted, a Manifold raking ball found Phillips scampering down the wing and a neat touch inside to Hardman who held it up intelligently and laid off for the advancing Leslie who made no mistake from close range 1-0. Seconds later how it never became 2 was beyond me, Phillips smashed the cross bar and from the rebound Adams smashed the post, never to mind another superb Smith free kick reached Hardman wide left and a touch and strike saw his effort well saved but luckily the rebound came back to him and he made no mistake second time round 2-0. It really should have been 3 minutes later when Curran found his way into the box receiving a low super Phillips cross only to blaze well over when yards in front of the goal. Willows then had a short spell of pressure creating some chances, Easterbrook in goal had a stunning save to make and overall our defence stood firm with Smith and Machin impressing. Still we was playing football which was a joy to watch from back to front keeping possession it was really enjoyable to see and our third was simply, simply lovleh. Curran, Leslie and Morgan played beautiful triangle passing which released Phillips down the wing and the impressive Philips laid it inside to Hardman who laid it low to Adams over on the left, taking one touch and striking low and hard it flew into the net 3-0…stunning team move capped by a fine finish. Just before the whistle blew for half time we again should have scored when Morgan had a chance of a tap in but twice failed to finish, still a superb first half performance which should have seen us well out of sight. Half time A much different start to the second as maybe the cut up pitch affected our play slightly as became awfully sloppy all over. 10 minutes in Hamm replaced Morgan in the hope that we would increase our advantage, Hamm nearly did instantly when a Curran corner aimed in low seen Hamm flick a boot out and their keeper pulled off a great save, moments later Adams missed when in a great position too. Then a poor goal was conceded when the ball squirmed under Easterbrook to give our opponents some hope 3-1. Still we created some big, big chances but a host of them were not taken, at times we seemed to try and walk the ball in the net which frustrated everyone involved. Bainbridge came on in place of Edge and Curran Snr for Phillips as we looked to keep a tight lid on proceedings. Unfortunately we conceded immediately as another decent Easterbrook save saw us concede a corner and a simple header was planted past the helpless Easterbrook and manifold on the line 3-2. The game should really have been out of sight and things could have got a whole lot worse yours truly won a number of big well timed challenges to avoid Easterbrook being left one on one and the impressive Manifold cleared one effort away. With minutes remaining and after a corner came to nothing, Curran snr kept the ball in the corner after a few robust attempt’s to get the ball away Dad found lad who in place found Smith to cross for Hamm to plant an easy header on the line in the net to at least give us some breathing space 4-2. The whistle came and so it ended, in reality it should never have become that close a sloppy second half came after a stunning first, but still we advance into the next round. Plenty of bright performances, Machin again at centre back, Smith covering was excellent as to was Manifold, midfield 3 bossed it in first half and front 3 especially Phillips were a constant threat but M.O.M went to that Man Dave Leslie who was again everywhere.
