The continuation of another cup adventure today facing The Farmers Arms in the 3rd round of the David Tacy Cup, after the previous rounds superb destruction of the Cat much was expected against a team once again leagues higher than ourselves.
The game started off and it soon became obvious we would get chances today with the way The Farmers shaped up, Rose and Coulls with early opportunity’s outlining this fact.
Adam Coulls started the game well and was firing balls left and right and through the middle which opened up our opponents and it was his clever ball which released Matty Smith to advance in the area but his shot narrowly went wide.
It was on 19 minutes that the breakthrough eventually came, Tom Briggs fired a stunning ball to an onrushing Adam Coulls who collected with a great first touch then rounded the keeper and subtly fired into an empty net to deservedly give us the lead 0-1…. That’s 7 in 6 for the man on fire in front of goal.
The back line of Yates, Easterbrook and Machin were solid in the first half sniffling out any chances that the Farmers looked top capitalize on and Jason McLaughlin in goal was in truth (apart from a few routine saves) was hardly troubled.
More chances followed and Liam Rose was extremely unlucky when a snap shot in the area just bounced away at the last minute from the post and Coullsy was unlucky with a header after a great cross from Philly Lennon.
Briggs was unlucky too when he glanced into the area from the corner line showing some neat footwork he worked an effort which was glanced over, the resulting corner going to waste after Ryan Smith had put in an excellent cross.
In the middle Ryan Smith and Dave Leslie mopped up any advancing trouble with relative ease allowing Coullsy a more advance role to cause panic in the farmers defence, another great Ryan Smith corner was put in the mix and it found its way to the edge of the box where for some reason Matthew Easterbrook was waiting and tbf he got decent contact on the ball with a great effort it agonizingly (for him not us) went just wide of the right hand post.
We needed to start to play our passing game a bit more but as long as we kept our composure and kept working hard the goals would come.
But inside the first 10 minutes Farmers came out of the blocks firing! Obviously fired up after a rollicking after their inept first half performance….. Something the Gaffer had warned us to be aware of.
They started to advance more and more and cause us problems as Jason had to be alert on more than one occasion and the defence had to be on their toes, after a corner to us they broke and with us not organised they had a chance to score but superb defending from Kevin Machin who once again in the left side of a back 3 was immense, kept us in front.
Then on 49 minutes they equalised, a ball from the Farmers defence wasn’t dealt with in the middle of the park and then we inexplicably at the back allowed the striker to read the line perfectly and advancing thru on goal he fired past Jason in goal 1-1.
Cue silly arguing!!
Seconds after the restart they attacked again and Sam Yates making a brave tackle twisted his knee in the turf and looked in considerable pain, moments later after a counter attack Kevin Machin fired a perfect ball down the channel to Matty Smith who after a superb first touch was literally taken out inside the penalty area, Liam Rose stepped up and fired a great penalty to restore our lead 1-2.
Sam Yates then had to come off, switching Ryan to the back and moving over Easterbrook to the right, Curran came on for a shot at redemption.
He was straight in the thick of things, it was his punt up field which found Liam Rose who with a stunning flick of the outside of his boot released Matty Smith through on goal and from just outside unleased a fierce drive with slight swerve which flew past the helpless keeper 1-3.
Liam with Tuesday in mind then came off in order for James Thomas to get 27 minutes of much needed action and he also was straight in action forcing the keeper to make a decent stop.
For the next 10 minutes we played some great football trying to kill the contest off, but just as he was about to be replaced Tom Briggs pulled up with what looked like a bad hamstring injury he was replaced by Sean Phillips.
Then after a failed clearance they scored to give themselves some hope, their striker firing past Jason with a scruffy finish 2-3.
Still this had the desired effect as we turned it up a notch in the last 20, some simple yet destructive football between Leslie, Curran and Coulls in the middle of the park found its way out to Phillips who earnt a free kick the resulting kick wasted by Curran.
Not so wasteful seconds later Curran strangely found his way on the left wing and after great footwork and strength found him free in the box he crossed to Coullsy who played in Neishy who moments earlier came on in place of Matty Smith, flicked a ball into a rampant James Thomas flicking it over himself Jimbob then turned and fired a neat finish to settle any nerves 2-4.
Daniel Croker then came on in place of Philly Lennon, once again straight in the mix with a few strong tackles strangely over the left side instead of the right side where he should have been.
Sean Phillips then raked a superb pass across field to Michael Neish who took a touch and fired over nearly taking out the easyjet flight 1892 from Ibiza.
With the game dying out Ryan Smith once again showing his huge versatility at the back put in a huge tackle to stop any last minute nerves, any nerves where then quelled moments later when an intelligent Neish pass found Curran, advancing 25 yards from goal on the right wing and with the keeper rushing off his line he hit a superb chipped effort which sailed over the stranded keeper….great finish 2-5.
That’s how it ended job done and we move onto the next round, not surprisingly the draw was made and we now face The Groves once again, I’m sure we will be sick of the sight of each other come end of the season but let’s hope we once again get the upper hand every time we face our formidable foes because if we do it surely will be a hugely successful season.
M.O.M today, some good performances all round even the subs like in the last game made a huge difference today, Adam Coulls is a man on fire in front of goal at the moment and his brain was ticking in full flow today but Kevin Machin was given it for a truly industrious performance which rarely goes unnoticed.
