Away friendly match played on 21 July 2021.
Kicked off at 6:00 PM

Good evening folks,

21st July Scotstoun

Victoria Park 3 Ashfield Blacks 3 (Anthony, Anthony, Lucas 1)

Shall we start with how hot it was tonight, 28 degrees when we kicked off at 6pm tonight, thought the boys done us proud, im sure some of the parents were feeling it as I was melting and I was as only on the sidelines. We consulted with the VP coaches and the referee to include water breaks either side of half time.

We started the game on the front foot and put pressure on VP’s defence straight away. Lucas, Conlan, Tyler and Anthony all involved in trying to get the opener. Both teams contesting the ball in midfield and when we got the ball down and started to move it and get our passing game going we looked very accomplished. We created our 1st chance and it didn’t really come to much, but as the keeper started to play it out we were alert and pressed very well and won the ball back quickly and young Anthony got a good shot away past the keeper into the back of the net, great goal and a great start, 1 nil Blacks. As centre was taken we pressed hard and our shape looked good, we created a couple of chances with Lucas 1 running up the left wing and managing to get a good ball into the box but we weren’t able to get on the end of it to convert these chances into goals. In one such attack the ball was cleared and picked up in the middle of the park by Anthony, he banked right and seen an opportunity to beat a man and drive up the right wing which he did so with aplomb, not only beating one man but 2 and sidestepped a third to rifle the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net for his and our 2nd goal, a brilliant individual goal. 2 nil Ashfield. We were really looking good at this point, they made a couple of changes and it looked like their more advanced players were making an appearance. We started to overpass the ball and got caught out at the back, we should have cleared it but didn’t and that let VP in and their player scored with a good finish Robbie was unlucky not to keep it out. 2-1 Ashfield. The next passage of play we were in the ascendancy on the front foot going forward, VP won the ball and after a tackle the ball deflected in the direction of our goal and fell to their forward who was quickly onto the loose ball and before our defence could get across and cover he was clean through and one on one with Robbie who done all the right things by racing out of his goal made himself big but was unlucky as their centre forward slid it past the oncoming Robbie to make it 2 each… on!

We made some changes at this point to give some of the boys a well earned rest and given the heat to make sure they weren’t over exerting themselves.

Straight from centre we were again on the front foot, pressing and harrying their midfield and defence, we were unlucky with shots being blocked and not taking a shot 1st time when it was on. As their goalkeeper put it out to their right back Lucas 1 was right on top of him and won the ball back, found an angle to slot a fantastic shot into the top right hand corner of the goal to make it 3-2 Ashfield, a great bit of determination and anticipation by Lucas to read what their goalie was doing and to get himself into the right position to not only win the ball but to get a great strike away for a brilliant goal. At this point we looked really strong, Lucas showing off his skills up that left channel, I think I seen a pirouette (had to spell check that one there troops) at one point as he beat a defender and almost managed to get the ball across the face of goal had it not been for another defender covering for the boy that Lucas had danced by! Referee blew for half time. The 2nd half wasn’t as eventful as the 1st as naturally the boys tired and the heat was really taking it out of them. Needless to say we made several changes and tried some of the new boys in different positions, young Lucas 2 in at left back done very well for us in there, Josh 2 up the right wing also put in a shift and Kyle 2 who played in the middle all done well and are starting to kick on. Late on in the 2nd half we made the same mistake again by not clearing our lines and were punished by a brilliant strike from their left mid that nestled in the top right hand corner of our net leaving Robbie not much of a chance of saving it. Taking the score to 3 each. I thought Robbie had another great game for us tonight making some really important saves at important points in the game. We created a couple of half chances Conlan was unlucky to have the ball snatched away as he was about to shoot and Tyler was unlucky with a shot that just tickled the post and went wide, we were very unlucky not to have won the game tonight, another learn for us to take forward. I thought defensively we looked strong, Caiden Zyg and Kyle/Lucas 2 all doing well for us in Defence, Caiden Carty looked very calm and composed at right back and made some important interceptions and clearances and passed the ball forward very well. Jared also helping out and we also tried Jared in Midfield too who done well for us. Overall a good game of football, 9’s is a different animal altogether from 7’s and it will take time for the boys to adjust, however I thought they were excellent tonight and a credit to themselves, the referee commented about both teams conduct and attitude being exemplary. On to the next, thanks again to the parents tonight for your support away fixtures can be tricky but your support is always appreciated.
