Charity Cup

Finally is a good word to describe Saturdays game, we finally started to play in the second half, we also finally dominated our opponents and we finally came away with the right result. If you concentrate on the score line I think most will see that it was a definite game of two halves. A stale first half; with us going through the motions and then a more aggressive and lively second half where we rightfully pushed aside Old Southendians.

We will start with the poor half, where as I might of mentioned at half time our focus was everywhere except the game. We tried to get some success out of our formation, Dean M going through on a couple of occasions, Lee Turner playing very well for his starting role and offering a lot of out balls, and energy on the wing and in general the whole team matching our opponent. So things were Ok right? No……..The team today we played were poor, very poor and we should have been 4 up before half time so I hope it was no surprise when I let loose at Half time.

Confidence is hard to build and yet I have it in this side. I feel that there are few teams in the next two divisions that should offer us much of a challenge but I seem to be seeing a different story on some of the teams faces. We need to generate a bit more focus and drive to marry our skill and determination or some of the better teams around us will ground out results against us. Just like Elmwood and B.K.S did at the start of the season. We start the game as we mean to end it committed, determined and without fuss OR I go get the players that will do that. If you want to win you need to feel you can and show you have the heart for trying…..Hence the second half performance.

To be honest something worked at half time, within 3 minuets of the restart we were 1-0 up, 15 minuets 2-0 up and 25 minuets 3-0, with us home and hosed and dominating. Yes they did exploit us for their wonder goal but in general everyone of us proved what I already know each of us was better than each of them. The first goal was notably the best team goal, a delightfully worked down our left back seeing Sam Rowe stealing into the box and playing a slide rule pass to Loui R who slid it home. Our second saw great work from the midfield and a through ball placed into the path of Loui R, who raced on and carved a great shot lobbing the keeper into the top right. The third was a carbon copy of our second.

Not only did we have the power and skill to dominate but we showed we could have had a hatful of goals, Dean W missing when put through, a series of corners producing and half chances. So we got all this performance from a team with a number of changes from our last game, a number of new playing relationships and a number of injuries and a number of players missing. Next week were hoping to get back a few Si P, Adam H, Big Eddy, Big Joe, Steve and hopefully Hat boy’s new injury will be good enough to get him back into contention.

This will add a lot to us, more competition, invention and increased determination. Our next game is away to B.K.S at Victory. A tough game against a team we owe. They beat us in the cup but this was more due to our mistakes and lack of focus than their football. W contained them at home and took the lead but then let them in within a minuet of taking the lead. They are dangerous and we need to be ready for the challenge.
