Monkton Vipers Vs Sherriff Hill – Saturday 17.04.10

Venue – Theatre of Dreams (and sometimes nightmares)

A cracking morning for a game of football, and would you believe it…we had a game of football to play !....The rejuvenated Sheriff Hill were the next opponents for a Vipers team in Champions League form…certainly a team to respect and treat seriously on the back of some great recent performances…Even the legend that is Paul Gascoigne had come along today…though somehow he missed our game and ended up watching the wrong match….as daft as a ships cat, he never changes, come back next week Gazza to see a proper game !

A full Vipers squad to select from and today Phil started with Matt “The Cougar” Agar in goal, Sam “The Ice Man” Marshall, Max “Vidic” Brown, Kaie “The Predator” Coates, Mason “The Ghost” Mitchell, , Kyle “The Terminator” Ferguson, Joe “The Hitman” Mitchell …James “The Assassin” Reed, James “Gatling Gun” Catley and Thomas “The Sergeant” Gargett warming up on the sidelines, just itching to get on – like the Magnificent 7…only 10 of them…..and oh yes….Phil “The Special One” Catley and Chris “Sasquatch” Mitchell on the sidelines…with the Mums, Dads & the whole Vipers Reds & Coaches cheering on the side lines (no middle names guys, that’s Dave “JK Rowling” Edwardson’s job !)

Today, you’ll find some football songs interspersed between the match report…but maybe to slightly different words than supposed to be…. feel free to sing along !

Now where was I …ah yes…the game !

Getting underway after a nice warm up, Sheriff Hill kicked off and attacked down the left…some good tackling from Kaie won a throw in, taken quickly by Mason to Kaie who cut inside then played a long ball across the pitch, deflected out for another Vipers throw in..

Some tough tackling from SH (Sheriff Hill) was making our life tough today…but Vipers not to be denies kept to the task, creating more threat up front and winning a first corner….taken from the left by Kyle but cleared long by SH back through to Sam who put the ball out of play under pressure from the strikers…

“He’s here, he’s there, he wears no underwear Lee Bowyer, Lee Bowyer !!” – Leeds Utd fans after Bowyer mentioned he sometimes doesn’t wear undies…uurghh !! Nasty…

Kaie tackling hard to win the ball back, helped out by Thomas who picked up the pass and played a long ball over to Mason…long ball by Mase was blocked by the defence but a good throw in eventually went across to Kyle on the left who fired over a high ball that Mason hit first time and just put wide – good effort from a difficult ball..

From the goal kick the ball went through to SH midfield who fired in a shot that Matthew dove onto…nice save from a difficult bouncing shot Matt !

From here we had around 7 minutes of play that, whilst looking about as pretty as a Monkton Coach with a hangover (you know the image I’m trying to create)…it proved how hard we are having to work to create chances in games…very hard !..some tough tackles from both teams, excellent marking up, some decent throw ins away down the line, and quick (which was great) but never quite taking the time to look up and compose ourselves before passing….sometimes it just happens and this was one of those spells….but it didn’t last forever….

Mention here to Sam Marshall in defence who really showed some good composure during this spell….taking a touch, then a look up before passing the ball clear – excellent Sam !

Good marking up for SH throw ins…Vipers getting goal side every time which was great to see…eventually our work rate paid off and a loose ball collected by Sam, intercepting a SH attack, then passing down the line through to Kaie, who passed on to Kyle who’s run and left foot cross was struck away by Joe to make it 1 – 0 Vipers !

Great goal guys !!

From the kick off SH attacked down the right, Kaie intercepting well but just fouling the player to give away the foul….patience young grasshopper…no panic and time your tackles….from the free kick, SH put a long ball through into the box and collected by Matt.

“It’s neat, it’s weird, it’s Rafas Goatee beard !” – Liverpool fans

BIG goal kick from Matt, flicked on by Kaie (involved in everything…great engine – like a Mercedes) but this time out at the SH end…..

Goal kick cleared from SH and a long ball through to Matt again…this time played to Thomas (on for Max) then onto Mason who flicked a first time ball over the top for Kaie to chase…just hit his effort a little early and skewed it wide but good running to create the chance…

SH attacking down the right, making the most of a quick throw in and getting into a dangerous position…Mason tracking back but SH still getting a looping shot away that had Matthew racing back – he had it covered well but the ball went just wide….

Nice goal kick from Matt, Thomas and Mase combining well again, playing a ball through to Joe but just snatched at the shot…SH keeper collecting well.

“He’s big, he’s Red, his feet hang out the bed, Peter Crouch, Peter Crouch” – Liverpool fans (again)

Big goal kick, but out by Kaie for a SH throw that Mason intercepted, crossing well to Kaie then Kyle, back inside to Joe but the shot just went wide….better from Vipers.

Joe closing down well from the goal kick to create another chance but just going wide again…

Another goal kick, another  Vipers throw in, this time from Mason to Kaie down the right, good run to the bye line (past 2 defenders) – whipped the ball across the box, Kyle picked it up on the left, cut back inside his man lovely and fired home the shot….2 -  0 Vipers and a great goal from Kyle….only through hard work and team work…..

Subs…James Reed on for Joe, Kaie off for James Catley,

Half time…2 – 0 Vipers and putting up a stiff opposition to a tigerish Sheriff Hill display..

Half time talk was basically well done, try and look up before you pass, look to move into space…don’t panic when you get the ball…oh yes and enjoy yourself !

The 2nd half went very much the same way as the 1st….both teams working hard to not concede possession…making the most of throw ins and corners…running the defence around at corners which was great to see after Wednesday’s session….

Max back on with Sam in defence (Mason off) starting to build some good rapport together Max covering for Sam with 2 great interceptions…then Sam returning the favour later in the half…good work guys.

James Catley linking up with James Reed through the middle, the ball just not quite running for us though and SH breaking away with it…

“Where’s your throw in gone, where’s your throw in gone ?” – heard at Stokes ground after Rory Delap was substituted…

James Catley getting the ball back from Max this time and taking off down the wing, eventually winning the corner….hammered away by the SH defence..

A hard pitch surface had the ball bouncing through quickly, making it difficult to control….plus wind behind in the 2nd half and more than 1 longish pass went straight through to the SH keeper…

James Reed chasing down the goal kick and firing in a shot, only the defender getting the block in stopped your chance….

Maybe a little bit of work to practice on Wednesday, running with the ball at your feet, without kicking it too far ahead….always a good skill to have in the bag…

“Who let the frogs out, who, who, who, who” Leicester fans welcome Arsenal in an FA Cup game

Good running from SH Jordan, carving through midfield and only stopped by a Thomas tackle…passed through nicely to James Catley who was away down the line, tackled well by SH then a ball through the middle for their centre forward to run onto, hitting a great shot in that looped over everyone’s heads and came back off the bar…very unlucky and a great effort (Matt tells me he had it covered all along of course)

Good couple of corners from Thomas, but cleared well by SH defence….this time coming back out to a chasing Thomas who fired in a wonderful strike that looked goal bound all day….a miraculous 1 handed save by the SH keeper somehow kept it out….very hard lines Thomas but a great performance today mate !

More hard work from James Catley and James Reed through the middle but no real opportunities coming your way despite your best efforts….

Shortly after and full time…..2 – 0 to the Vipers but a valiant display from Sheriff Hill who can be proud of their efforts today – on another day they may well have gotten something from the game.

From our perspective, whilst we could certainly (at times) have passed the ball better, looked up when we had the ball before kicking it and showed more composure in the last quarter of the pitch, we can take lots of positives from the game….We won !!! Matthew – solid display, Defence – excellent all day (how many chances did SH get ? not many), closing down and tackling, midfield – good tackling and lots of running, up front – some great runs in the 2nd half, just a shame that midfield didn’t see you wide open, took our goals very well – remember to shout and give your team mates a nudge that you’re in the open !

Man of the Match from Phil went to Kyle for another great effort, and to Thomas from Chris for a solid performance and great effort on goal late on…

Everyone else – great effort, and it was a close call between 3 or 4 others as to who got that MOM award today…you know who you are !

Amazing that both of our goals came from good passing and movement….lets’ remember that in future ! Keep it simple and we’ll be back on song !

Speaking of which, one last singalong from Sunderland fans to Chelsea fans a short while ago… “You’ve got Mourinho, we’ve got Roy Kean-io”

Well done and see you Wednesday !
