SYFA GADFYL League Game Sunday 17th October 3pm

Ashfield Blacks 2 -1 Glasgow Maccabi

Kaleb Kerr David McCartney

Evening folks,

Today’s game was against Glasgow Maccabi a team we played at 7’s over a year ago so a bit of a unknown quantity. We were a bit late kicking off as our scheduled referee (yip that same referee that abandoned our game a few weeks ago), as he finished his game before our game the ref said to the Glasgow Maccabi coaches someone else was coming along to ref our game? Clearly not. They looked a big physical side. We started as per our 3 previous games in a 3-3-2 formation.

Our pre match team talk centered around effort. We asked the boys to work hard, for each other, retaining our shape and getting that ball moving and getting it forward. We asked for a fast start and to try and get on the front foot. 1st half we seemed to be 2nd to the loose balls and seemed to sit off Maccabi, we just didn’t seem to settle or get our passing game going, the ball also just wouldn’t settle for us and we just couldn’t fashion out a clear cut chance. We had half chances and hit the bar at least once from long range Conlan and Logan leading the front line did well to hold ball up and Conlan was unlucky not to get on the end of a low cross from David on the right wing.

Defensively we kept Maccabi to half chances although from long range they also hit the bar which Robbie was alert to and had it covered.

On one such attack Maccabi managed to get the ball forward and as we were clearing it came back into our 6 yard box high and bounced Robbie got down to it but it bounced awkwardly and Maccabi’s forwards bundled it over the line.

At our half time team talk Jason and I asked the boys for more effort, we asked the boys to react quicker win those balls in midfield and get the ball forward. We said that if we put in more effort we will turn this game around.

To their credit the boys went out and really dug in. We had Kaleb up front with Logan at this point the ball was picked up by Kaleb who beat a defender sidestepped another and shifted the ball to the side and rifled a low shot past the keeper into the back of the net, Kaleb’s 1st goal for Ashfield and one that is very well deserved, Kaleb works his socks off for the team and what a great goal to open his account. Well done young man. That evened the game up nicely.

At this point in the game it was even Steven, we had chances from Corners send Zyg up there to try and get his head on the end of one of these crosses. We seem to be making more out of our corners now as in the past it’s been a bit of waste or a nothing chance, now with Zyg our target man it’s turning out to be a goalmouth scramble or a half chance as a result of it. Lat on in the game Kyle took a bit of a knock and we put David back into centre mid. We were really pushing for the winner, hemming Maccabi further and further back, our shape was really good and Maccabi was finding it really difficult to get out their own, even tho their keeper was a big tall physical lad and could punt it. Maccabi’s keeper tried to go long with a by kick, picked up just inside Maccabi’s half by David he wrong footed a Maccabi player and hit shot from really long range and it hit the inside of the post and into the back of the net, it was that far out a few of the boys had a bit of a delayed reaction ‘did that go in’ I heard one of them say….and yeah it did go in to put us 2-1 up what an effort from David, a sublime strike possibly a bit cheeky trying it from that range but David has that in his locker, well done to him what a goal to score and what a time in the match to score that goal.

There was less than 9 minutes left, we managed to fashion out a could of half chances, Kaleb and Lucas both had really good strikes on goal both saved one went wide Kaleb unlucky to not have not made it 2 and Lucas unlucky not to have scored today.

In the last few minutes Maccabi really pushed for the equaliser, Robbie pulled off a couple of brilliant saves and came racing off his line to put a challenge in and thwart a Maccabi attack. Heart in the mouth stuff. At that the clock ran out and time was called we won 2-1!

In summary we seen some great performances today from Jared, Zyg, Lucas and Kaleb to name but a few. 2nd half we really came alive started to believe and that extra effort was found as a team. The boys showed such heart and showed great character to come back from 1 nil down to winning the game. The boys were buzzing at the end of the game, just as much as Jason and I, it’s moments like that, that make it all worth it, proud of all the boys today what a game, what an effort, what a result. Thanks again to all the parents as always for their unwavering support.
