****Match Report**** Sunday 22nd August Glasgow Green 3pm Ashfield Blacks 4 OLA Sparta 1 (Josh 2, Aaron, Logan, Caiden)
Thought the boys played really well today, it was very humid this afternoon and that can take it out of ye. The effort and performance was fantastic, the pre match team talk centred round our forward press, likened to what Celtic did on Saturday against St Mirren. We asked the boys to work their socks off today and that’s exactly what they done. We started with a 3-3-2 formation.
It was a tight game to begin with a lot of back and forward in midfield David in the centre done a lot of work winning the ball and trying to get us forward. Lucas and Caiden in left and Right midfield also working hard to get us forward.
Defensively we looked solid at the back Zyg, Lucas 2 or (Minty) is his nickname & Hammy doing their jobs ever so well.
Kaleb worked his socks off dropping in deeper of the 2 strikers and Conlan our point man holding the ball up.
First 15 odd minutes we weren’t able to fashion out any clear cut chances, but mostly the ball was up OLA’s half of the field. We decided to change the personnel and Lucas picked up a wee knock on his thigh so we made some changes.
Josh 2, Aaron and Logan all came on with Jared replacing Lucas. The boys that entered the field hit the ground running and kept the play up in OLA’s half, we got the ball forward with Jared, Josh, Lucas and Logan all involved, we were unlucky not to score with the 1st effort then Josh followed up retrieved the loose ball and managed to squeeze it by the keeper and into the back of the net from a tight angle for his 1st league goal for Ashfield, well done wee man. That was around 23/25 mins into the 1st half our 1st goal came. We seen the rest of the 1st half out nullifying the response from OLA who were trying really hard to get forward and create something. Ref blew for half time.
2nd half we kept the same formation and personnel, Aaron, Logan, Jared and Josh all getting forward but wasn’t able to convert the half chances created. As OLA were trying to play out from the back Josh pressed their defender into making a pass into their own box excellently anticipated by Aaron who pounced on the loose ball took a touch a fired it past the keeper to take us to 2 nil, great alertness and finish from young McGlinchey!
As the 2nd half rolled on we started to tire. Heat and effort starting to bite into the boys, OLA started to get forward at this point and we were unlucky not to have cleared our lines when OLA snatched a goal back.
Pivotal moment in the game, was the boys heads going to go down? After some great work in Midfield by David, who I need to mention had a great game for us today I don’t think there is a blade of grass he didn’t cover today, did a lot of the spade work for his team today, the not so glamourise side of the game got the ball out to Jared who I also thought had a great game today, move sorta broke down, logan then ended up driving through the middle after a few blocks the ball came back out to Logan who then slotted a great strike into the net to take us 3-1 up great goal and great team play.
We then put Conlan, Kaleb, Lucas back on and Kyle who was feeling a bit better on for ‘Minty’ at left back, the fresh legs seemed to pay dividends as we pretty much kept OLA in their own half, Some excellent pressing work from Conlan winning us a corner. From there we were hemming OLA in I think at one point OLA had 10 men behind the ball and were defending for their lives, we had a couple of half chances and we won another corner after some excellent work from Kaleb the ball just would break for us Kaleb shot blocked, Conlans shot blocked and after Kaleb and Josh played some lovely interchange passing on the right hand side Kaleb slid the ball into the box and Caiden Carty in the right place at the right time passed the ball into the net for a brilliantly worked team goal from the Black’s.
The last few passages of play were mostly in OLA’s half and Zyg even driving from defence into the midfield to get us forward, and had an effort at goal and wasn’t too far away. Conlan & Kaleb also very unlucky not to have scored today both having late attempts at goal saved by the OLA keeper.
In summary that’s the best we have seen the Blacks play so far, OLA are not a bad team, they had some big physical boys but we are also starting to show our physicality in games. They couldn’t deal with our work rate, effort nor our tempo today. Every boy put 100% in and that’s all Jason and I can ask and hope for. Results and goals aside, it was the team performance, working for each other and playing as a team is what really enthralled us.
Thanks to the boys for today, thank you parents for your support as always it’s appreciated. Onto the next.
