Wimborne Colts Vs Bransgore Two Rivers Meet 10am 23/03/2020

The weather has continued to be horrendous and Wimborne do not currently have a pitch available to play on, so they had scheduled this to be played on the 3G. I was hoping this would suit us well, as I see the boys training on 3G and I know that on our day we could beat anyone.

Wimborne had only previously lost only 1 of their last 16 games, so would obviously pose a real challenge to our boys.

Overnight Gales persisted and there were gusts up to 80mph in Bournemouth, I did wonder whether this would be on and had visions of the boys being blown all over the place. However the rain had stopped and wind died down around 9am so after a text from their manager we were good to go.

The set up at 2RM was a bit of a shambles, and we were only given 10minutes to warm up. We also noticed that the goals were too big and Mark and I were confident that we could deal with this and an agreement with their manager to stay with the goals took place.

In the warm up the boys did some good keep ball exercises and were using the space well with 3on1’s. We also quickly practiced finishing into the corners and we got them to kick against the wind to see how the wind affected their shots.

Unfortunately I didn’t take too many notes (as I was caught up in the game) so it is based on memory from me and Mark.

The game kicked off and initially I thought a couple of the boys took a couple of minutes to get going, however we had asked the boys to press and hunt in packs for the ball, moving together and supporting each other in the tackle. I thought Frankie set the pace excellently in the first few minutes and he dispossessed Wimborne early on and started attacks. This proved infectious and Harvey followed suit, by closing down the ball after a Frankie cross had been intercepted. Harvey took a touch and poked the ball past the keeper into the net. 1-0 to the gore on 5 minutes.

Within 45 seconds we were 2-0 up. Finnley won the ball on the right and crossed to Harvey who poked home a quick fire second. The boys celebrated and seemed delighted to go 2-0 up.

We made 2 changes on 12minutes and bought Harry and Finnley off and put Joe and Brooke on. Frankie went to the back with Ronnie and Brooke went on the left with Jack playing right sided.

Harvey was caught by late tackles on a couple of occasions and I was vocal about this to the referee as it had happened 2 or 3 times. Credit to Harvey for battling on and not giving in to their tactics.

Caleb was needed to make a couple of saves at his feet. I can also tell that Caleb has been working on his distribution, and it is paying off with him getting his head up and being so much more aware of the players around him. He chose to kick and throw the ball out, for us to break quickly which gave us a different dimension.

On 20 minutes there was a scramble on the edge of the box, the ball fell to their player (who was well offside ??) and he tapped in from close range. 2-1! It is important that the boys always make sure we are last man, especially until the offside rule comes in.

We then had a great chance to get our 3rd and some great work from Jack and Joe led to Harvey being in. Their goalkeeper came out and Harvey went round him. Harvey then went to shoot but Lenny (ex Bransgore player) made a great tackle to prevent Harvey’s hat-trick. Harvey was convinced there was a handball, but still it was great defending and nothing was given.

Half Time.

Frankie and Harvey came off with Harry going to the back with Ronnie and Finnley going back to the right side. Brooke went up front with Jack on the left.

We defended well together and between Ronnie, Harry, Joe and Caleb we limited Wimborne to long shots with Caleb standing strong in goal and making a couple of great saves off deflected shots.

Step up Finnley Green!! Winning the ball on the half way line after a Caleb kick, attacking and running at their left back and then smashing the ball into the bottom left hand corner on 30minutes. Great goal and great to see Finnley attacking their defence. 3-1!!

After this we seemed to lose our shape a little and we put Jack up front with Brooke moving back to left side.

On 33 minutes Wimborne got 1 back after a shot from the right, which just crept under Caleb. 3-2.

On 35 minutes moving Jack up front paid off, with him being switched on after another run from Finnley ended with a shot which was saved and Jack instinctively followed in and finished well. 4-2!

We then made a few changes on 37 minutes to make sure all the boys got the same playing time with Frankie coming on for Ronnie and Harvey going back up front for Jack.

We had to defend well together at this time and the boys were all working together, but we continued to look a threat on the break with some good work from Joe and Brooke nearly allowing Joe to get the shot off, but it just didn’t fall in the right areas.

On 43 minutes Wimborne got to 4-3 after a powerful shot which was going wide hit the back of one of our players and flew onto the top corner.

A clearance from Harry set us on the break soon after and Joe and Brooke played a quick set of passes and Joe’s run took the defender away and allowed Brooke to get a shot off, stinging the hands of the goalkeeper who couldn’t keep it out. 5-3 and game over!! ??

I really don’t want to focus on the negative aspects of this Sunday morning, I want to focus on the fact that we ‘can beat anybody’ and hopefully this will give the boys huge belief in themselves!

It was an excellent performance and we beat on paper the best team in the league. They have 4/5 Academy fringe players and would have expected to roll us over today.

MOTM went to Finnley for his best game this season and also to Harvey with his 2 goals and constant work rate and never giving up!

Special mention to all of the boys for their efforts in turning over possession and also to Caleb who made a number of excellent saves again.

Me and Mark are very proud of all their efforts and this has to be our best performance/result since me and Mark took over the reigns.

I received text from parents and managers from 5 teams all congratulating our boys and saying what a good side on our day we are! AFC Bournemouth ‘Coach James’ also sent me this....

“””Great result today mate... The colts have an awesome team and have been unstoppable this season...
