All hail Tony Ross!!!
In treacherous wet and windy conditions likened to Jack Willans underpants the Menanians once again took the risk of throwing in some new blood in a big game.
With usual stars absent - Horncastle (Ear Ache), Bambi (Work), Tommo (Making up to girlfriend after leaving the door open whilst drunk last night), Collins (in a sulk) the Menanians signed on local Scarborough Town wing wizard Wayne Brooksby and former Rounders star and Saturday league keeper of the season 87/88 Tony Ross.
Menan kicked off with 5 as Brooksby gave the female fans something to get excited about on the touchline as he had forgotten to put his shirt on. This resulted in a full monty style strip tease before entering the fray. The season high crowd were taking more photos than a coach load of japanese men in a museum as Tony Ross took his roll in the white pipes. His status as Hill Climb Champion of the 06 Tour De Scotland on his 21 gear mountain bike is sure to raise shirt sales and Menan coffers alike!!
With the action underway and the new boys settling in the Menanians quickly got to grips with the weather and began to unleash their A-Game on the Eastfield Boys. Brooksby was put through only to miss whilst one on one with the Eastfield Keeper. More chances were to come with Brooksby and Dobson both being the guilty parties with more guilt edge chances not finding the onion bag.
Then it happened.... Brooksby taking the ball bang on the half way line before endulging in a Jonas Guiterrez style jinking run through several Eastfield opponents then slotting home with Michael Owen style ease. The crowd went wild with stewards having to fight back Menanians squad players Ward and Lovell down the touchline.
"A cracker, one for the collection book" beamed Ward to our touchline reporter Gail Hailstorm. "Truly buzzin and Ronaldo'esk" added Lovell as they took to their seats knowing the 75p entrance fee was now worth its weight in gold.
At the other end bike hill climbing legend Ross was called into action after Willan was skinned like a kipper by Jackson who fired a ferocious drive at goal. The shot looked wide until a devious swerve saw Rossy fling himself to the right of his goal and palm away like Superman for an Eastfield corner. A save worthy of a goal in anyones book.
In trutch Menan could and should of had the game done and dusted by the half time whistle as Boro town big timers Patterson and Brooksby showed some slick interplay only to see Patterson deliver a worm burner to the Eastfield keeper.
Half time 1 v 0
With the Menanian faithful in full voice chanting "Attack, Attack, Attack" more chances were sure to follow.
Eastfield took the initiative with the Menanians coming out cold after the break and looking distinctly unorganised in a 2/3 minute spell. After some top organisation from the back between Plumpton and Willan this spell didnt last long. Ross was however called into action and again came up trumps with some saves from his legs and upper body from Heggarty in Eastfield colours.
More slick play down the left from Willan, Brooksby and Patterson saw Dobson found in acres of space only for him to drag the shot wide with the goal gaping which even drew an "oh dear" from match official Les Ramm!
The final move of the game once again reminisent of Brazil saw Plumpton put is head amongst Jacksons boots to win the ball for Menan. Brooksby combined with Dobson whos deft flick sent Plumpton in the clear with his eyes lit up like a rabbit in the headlights he poked the ball goalwards only to see it wonderfuly saved, but Brooksby was on hand to finish at an acute angle and see the 3 point haul go back to Inter Menan territory.
With a 6 point lead over the Eastfield boys surely ending their title hopes it leaves a straight shoot out between Menan and main rivals TidyStar FC. Questions are still being asked by the Menanian faithful such as Will this run of victories continue? Who is now Menanians number 1? Is Brooksbys hair a perm or natural? Will Dobson recover from this 28 minute goal drought? and will Willan learn his lesson and not fight with local doormen??? maybe next week will throw up some answers!!
Tonights match sponsors Ged and Disco Dave's "Rave down the shops productions" gave debut boy Brooksby the champers just pipping fellow debutant Rossy to the glory.
