Menan finish runners up in league fix!
The Menanaians finished their season in the runners up spot thanks to some controversial and despicable acts by Eastfield Boys and TidyStar.
Menan were 14 minutes away from the title when suddenly Eastfield let Tidy cheat their way to the glory by running the ball into the goal and leaving Menan out in he cold.
It had all started well for Menan with the tangerines doing their bit by beating a stubborn and frustrating Royal Oak 2-1 in the first match up of the night.
The Royal Oak legion turned out some soccer legends with Magic Mike starting the game in his Mcdonalds work boots, using his 74 yr old age and wisdom to dominate the opening 14 seconds of the match. Menans nemesis and Oak playmaker Geoff "Ossy" Osguthorpe was out there pulling the shots like a poor teams Cesc Fabregas.
An amazing turn out at the Pindar Astro arena saw the Menanians stride forward like Bambi after his first few steps as they cut through the Oakians with ease on numerous occasions only to see their stopper and gaffer Jamie Fowler deny them with some top draw saves. 6 a side England International gaffer Peter Beardsley was surely impressed as the yellow shirt wearing stopper flung himself back and forth like Wayne Brooksby in the cage last Saturday in Boleyn’s!
The week was almost topped with a goal for Menan's Josh Greening as he took to the front line fresh from a trial with Championship side Sheff Utd. The hit man waltzed his way around Dave Fowler as if he was a cardboard cut out and found himself one on one with his offspring, only for Greening to pass up the opportunity and attempt his special move "The scoop" and make an absolute fool of himself. Nobody has made a fool of them self on quite this scale since the 07/08 winter season when Willan left the field of play in tears after crashing his extra large swede against the crossbar after a dizzy penalty gone wrong!
Menan were dominating the game and the goal seemed only moments away with chance after chance coming and going with Hawkes the main culprit in front of goal. The woodwork was proving to be the 7th man, being struck on two occasions much to the delight of "Ozzy" who let off a high pitch scream of delight both times.
Suddenly from absolute no where, it happened about as unexpected as chilling at ur mates party, everything’s going well, nice tidy girl on your arm and BANG in walks your Mum, home early from a dirty weekend with the milkman, it surely cant get any worse?? Oh yes it can! Royal Oaks "Rooney" strips the Menan back line with his devastating Robbie Earl wing like pace and finishes into Tony the cat Ross's far right corner with a glorious finish and Robot style celebration! The Menan followers greeted the team with boo's and whistles, a win here would send them top and this is the opposite to the target!
Right from the kick off Menan pressed again with Willan slicing wide and Dorey missing up opportunities, they said it was tough in the pressure cooker that is "the cube" but not this tough!
Half time - Royal Oak 1 v Neil Menan
The Menanians were taking a hammering from team gaffer Plumpton back in the changing rooms; the team talk was pretty rough too as Plumpton demanded more in front of goal. The goal hanging forwards were firing blanks when in great positions and it needed to change. A tactical change, shown on the team projector, white board and subbuteo pitch in the changing rooms paid dividends in the second half as Menan came out all guns blazing and peppered Fowler’s charmed goal. After numerous golden opportunites and horrendous goal gaping misses likened to Ade Akinbiyi in his Premiership days, Captain Patterson finally stepped up to the plate and did what the Royal Mail strikers have failed to do, DELIVER!
Menan were like Christian from Eastenders in a swimming pool full of trunk wearing blokes, their tales were up and wanted to take it to the next level! The next level they did as The Hawkester finally broke his duck and transferred his Scarborough Town form to where it matters most and notched the winner with minutes to go.
With the whistle blown and 3 points gained Menan sat pretty at the top, which was only the beginning of the story. To cut it short and in an attempt to not become teary eyed, Menan are the true champions, the champions of fair play!
Roll on the cup week and hopefully Menan’s first piece of silverware!
