Surrey Intermediate Cup 4th Round

Woodmansterne Hyde 1 Leatherhead 4
H-T: 1-3

Leatherhead marched into the Quarter Finals of the County Cup with a comfortable victory over Redhill + District League leaders Woodmansterne Hyde on a heavy pitch on Sunday morning. An opening half hour in which Leatherhead stormed into a 3-0 lead put paid to the home sides challenge.

Leatherhead began brightly, passing with purpose, and retaining possession against a well drilled Woodmansterne outfit who were predominantly defensive in their formation. Richard Brady dominated the attacking moves for Leatherhead, his first touch a joy, creating space for Nick Bennett and Scott Coppin, whose pace caused constant problems, who were exposing a tentative looking Woodmansterne keeper whose handling appeared suspect. Brady outwitted the defence earning a penalty on 20 minutes that he confidently converted to give Leatherhead the lead – a fair reflection on their dominance. The next 10 minutes was all Leatherhead, with excellent quick passing and movement amongst the visitors front six, who cut open the home sides defence. Coppin made it 2-0 on 27 minutes, completing an excellent move with a reverse pass from Brady opening up the defence, and Brady made it 3-0 two minutes later latching onto a Bennett through ball and slotting home from close range.

Woodmansterne enjoyed their best period of the game just before half time, particularly attacking Leatherhead down the left side, and it was from one such breakaway they replied on 37 minutes with a well taken strike.

A series of second half substitutions disrupted the pattern of play, and tempers became frayed following a number of ill timed challenges from the Woodmansterne players whose frustration at being outplayed became apparent. Tom Ashdown and Matt Alcoe impressed in midfield, and the solid back four won every header, making life easy for the confident Dave Driscoll in goal. Joe Peak made it 4-1 on 78 minutes with a fine first time left footed shot completing another good move.

Team: Dave Driscoll, Martyn Buchanan, Matt Sime, Ollie Fenwick, Joe Peak, Will Ashdown, Nick Bennett, Tom Ashdown, Matt Alcoe, Scott Coppin, Richard Brady. Subs: Alex Leyland, Alex Kendall, Connor Merrigan, Joe Findlay, Steve Fitzgerald.
