Tonight we faced Vaults Fc in our first midweek game of the season.
Difficult decisions which will sure to be a common theme this season with once again having a big squad saw new signing Philly Bryan missing out on a place on the bench, taking it on the chin and supporting throughout is exactly the attitude we are looking for.
After an impressive start to the game, the start we wanted arrived very soon …9 minutes to be exact as a great long ball from the back from Easterbrook found its way to Hardman who hit a terrific powerful finish past their helpless keeper 1-0.
You could sense the boys looked even more up for this tonight as was evident when Curran smashed into a huge tackle in the middle of the park which earnt praises from the following dell fans in the packed home stand.
Then out of nowhere on 20 minutes the Vaults equalised as Ryan Smith conceded a cheap free kick on the left and a decent cross was met by a shockingly free header and the game was tied at 1-1.
Like I said the boys seemed up for it tonight and our reply was instant, great play all round as simple football got us our second of the night, Smith to Curran a neat flick inside to Hardman who found Machin in acres of space on the left and he rifled into the top corner … great team goal 2-1.
Still Vaults came back and a combination of Jimmy Rainford and Curran stopped a second equaliser as a brave save and a superb tackle in the penalty area kept us in front. Straight from that we advanced with the impressive Lennon finding Rose inside the box and with a neat turn he finished like he done in the first game expertly past the keeper to put us 3-1 in front.
Another game and another load of Easterbrooks unbelievable headers, I’m sure them things on his feet are some sort of pockets of spring pads the height the lad gets.
With seconds to spare we got a thoroughly deserved fourth after great work again by Rose whose shot was saved, the rebound falling to Hardman who once again showed his unselfish side squaring to Machin who got his second of the night with a simple finish 4-1.
With seconds to go of the half we should of had a penalty after a stunning thru ball from Hardman found Curran in the box only to be wiped out and the ref ignoring everyones pleas.
Great first half performance and a joy to watch.
More great football at the start of the second as again the very impressive Dave Leslie won a great challenge and showing great feet combined with Smith and Curran who released Rose inside the box and he finished under the keeper to give us a great start to the half 5-1.
Leslie was in action again as his superb thru ball was met by Hardman who just missed, the ball coming back off the keeper via a defender Hardman could hardly believe his luck as he gratefully accepted their generosity and tapped in to give us a 6-1 unassailable lead.
With 60 minutes on the clock a host of changes was made as Curran,Machin an Easterbrook all came off for a deserved rest and on came Tom Briggs, Lee Miller and Mike Edge in their place.
For the next 10 minutes we was put under some slight pressure and tailed off the game slightly as the changes (as they sometimes do) seemed to affect our play, more changes were made as Harper came on for Sam Yates and Young Alfie Textas came on for the once again impressive Hardman for his debut.
However the next goal came from the Vaults as to be fair a superb cross was met by an even better header which flew past a helpless Rainford in goal 6-2.
Still with the clock winding down we had chances as Leslie tried to cap off a great performance with a goal but his shot went high and wide.
With minutes left a superb Smith ball was met by the hardworking Rose who collected and unselfishly squared to give Textas a simple tap in goal on his debut to cap off a brilliant team performance 7-2.
One of the best performance I’ve witnessed from the lads tonight some great simple fast football played and at times it was a joy to stand back and watch….more of the same of that and we could be in for another special season.
