Ladies 2-0 Cheltenham Civil Service Ladies GCWFL - Div 2 (11th October 2020)

They say a week is a long time in football and that’s certainly been the case for the Ladies this week that has seen a clean bill of health in the squad turn into a growing injury list!

Not ideal preparation for the arrival of former Division 1 opposition but with the Ladies squad boasting great strength in depth it just meant a reshuffle of personnel and it was business as usual.

The game started cautiously with both teams getting a feel for each other and sussing each other out but it wasn’t too long before Olveston start to create some chances with Emma Foxwell and Lauren White going close. The visitors were defending deep with a back four not keen to explore too far forward and the Ladies were haven’t to be patient. On the half hour mark it looked like the deadlock would be broken as the busy Emily Nicholson was brought down the box. Penalty!

Up stepped Lauren White, but the strikers effort hit the crossbar and behind to safety. A let off for Cheltenham. Just four minutes later though the deadlock was broken. A fantastic delivery from Paige Fowler in behind the visitors defence saw Nicholson race onto it before slotting home past the one rushing keeper.

As the half wore on Olveston were creating further chances but some wayward finishing and the posts were coming to the rescue of visitors. Cheltenham’s main outlet was down the right with their number 15 the main playmaker linking up well with their number 6 and some solid defending kept the attacks at bay.

HT 1-0

The second half saw more chances come Olveston’s way with Olivia Hood nearly breaking the goal with her fiercely hit shot early in the second half and with Olveston struggling to put the game to bed the visitors seemed to be growing with confidence and were attempting to play a long ball over the top but the home defence were cool under pressure often playing back to Tash in the home goal and building up from the back.

Frustration was building as the half wore on with the referee blowing up with almost any physical contact from either side but Olveston kept pushing and when Olivia Hood slid a cross into Abbie Mitchell it looked like the striker might add that all important second but the visiting keeper slide in at the feet taking a knee to the head and denying Mitchell. The keeper was thankfully able to continue shortly after.

More chances came and went and with Olveston switching a more defensive formation to see the game out they would finally grab their second. Some good work from Emma Foxwell on the edge of the box saw her slide a pass into Abbie Mitchell and the striker jinxed past a couple of challenges before finishing brilliantly from an acute angle into the far corner to secure the points.

FT 2-0

A game that should’ve yielded more goals sees the Ladies make it 3 wins from 3 and maintain their position at the top of the Division 2 table heading into next weekends League Cup tie with Division 1 side Abbeymead Rovers.
